352230	2005-05-05 05:41:00	Next monday I start work as a PC Technician, with a few others, to test / Audit 1000 computers & 110 pellet loads of equipment [or so the reports so far suggest]. I was looking to try and find more knowledge to make a better system I have been utilising Magazine resources for testing equipment. Found so far CPU/RAM/HDD HW info, usual sorts of tools Keyboard: Found keyboard testing software Modem: Found look back and modem 2 modem test software Monitor: Found DisplayMate as used by PC World Sound Test Professional Software Based Testing Computer HW info Into MS Access or MS SQL Printer: Test Print Recommended Software Data for Printing Laser/Inkjet Scanner: Test Scanning sheets, to check scanning quality or correctness Floppy Disk: recommended checker With Read/Write/Seeks DVD/CD: Read test, not so much write Professional Hardware Based Testing USB 1/2 Testing COM Testing Printer Port Testing RAM Testing CPU Testing [Rare even if present?] Professional IT Auditing Management System System which collates HW Info analysis times, Error rates, Make/Models, issues with models, Technician performance. [I have found some on hotscripts.com and other offerings, still researching] I am looking to find out the offerings to professional and or free standards so I can present them and evolve my knowledgebase. So far I have viewed about 250-350 products but still want more information to compile. I also have some questions that will go into another post in chat re: ISO9000 & ISO14000 [or similar standards]. I have much to learn about the professional tools, This is probably only scraping the surface to make a good system	CreightonBrown (5692)

352232	2005-05-05 05:49:00	I also have found some 'Burn In test software' but want more of the good stuff. Some tasks may be able to be performed manually, but automation processes may be beneficial for standardisation perhaps, more knowledge of whats out there, possibly quality, quantity enhancements. I have also found some to insert HW Reports into a DB, but still seek more knowledge of offerings.	CreightonBrown (5692)
352233	2005-05-05 06:00:00	Wouldn't the company that hired you have its own testing program and tools/software that it prefers? I imagine they would want to make sure all the technicians are doing all the same tests to ensure standardised and reliable results.	Jen (38)

I will find out what they have as well, I have been informed they have some system already. I would assume if more research is done, more knowledge may be gained. In some cases it may cancel each other out, in others not. I have heard reports of how it is done now, briefly, and i wish to present ideas to make the system even better, to evolve the business process/service.	CreightonBrown (5692)

352236	2005-05-05 06:26:00	I would suggest you turn up for work,find out how they want it done, then do want they want,how they want, to the best of your abilities. That doesn't mean the track your trying to go down, You can pull all that out of the bag when uou want to go for a higher level job,or when you have a higher level job. For the time being its only going to complicate a pretty straight foward task (ie-See if it works,If not bin it)	Metla (12)

352238	2005-05-05 07:15:00	I often get largish loads of ex corporate comps and monitors dumped on me. I can audit around 50 in 2 hours; Step one. Comps If they look knackered they probably are -set aside for possible parts stripping or dumping Step 2 Monitors. They have proper bases, any screen burn, dark, colour out of whack, cords buggered, cracks in case, case looks like it has jaundice, if so they are toast. Step 3 Quick visual inspection of power supply if its propriatry the system goes in the dump pile. step 4 Boot each one with a boot cd that shall remain nameless and check specs, quick hardware benchmark, hard drive , memory test and vid test and in to the survival pile if it passes. OR to use Metlas more to the point advice, bin it if it doesn't work It simply isn't economic in terms of time and labour to troubleshoot old systems	the highlander (245)

I agree that there is only so much is feasible, depending on the value of the potential gain e.g. expense vs potential income. I want to compile my own series of top notch tools though for this and beyond.	CreightonBrown (5692)
