351947 2005-05-04 04:04:00 I'm looking at upgrading Zone Alarm to 5.5 from 5.1 and was looking for helpful hints or negative experiences from other members before I do so. I have had a quick look at the ZA support forum and there appear to be quite a few upgrade problems - although in fairness people only post if there is a problem.

The reason I am asking is that my network has been stable for some time, but it took a bit of sweat and swearing to get it to work properly with the ADSL & everything else, and I don't want to go through that again if it is going to cause more hassle than it's worth.

If you use ZA, have you upgraded? If so, what was your experience?

TIA, Andrew

351948 2005-05-04 04:08:00 pro ver or free ver?

havn't had much of a hassle. just make sure your pc is spyware free and you do a clean install rather than an upgrade. also note the usual conflicts with antivirus email scanners, if you use pop3 scanner then turn off ZA's email protection.

351949 2005-05-04 04:17:00 Well I believe in Dont fix it if it isn't broken.
I am still using ZA Pro ver 4. Works for me.
If I was to do it - I'd ghost my PC first - just in case.

351950 2005-05-04 04:19:00 I use the latest free version and a number of other free programs to do what the Pro versions does, and have no problems. Avast did give me a warning, but it continues to operate. KiwiTT_NZ (233)

351952 2005-05-04 04:39:00 I am on Auto updates and I had to look at the version number to see that I had the newest one. I didn't notice any change. theother1 (3573)
351953 2005-05-05 04:15:00 Thanks for the comments. For those that did upgrade, did you install over the top or do an uninstall and reinstall? If you do a full reinstall will ZA lose your current settings? Would I retain the current settings if I installed over the top?

Mind you, I may just wait for a significant upgrade given online tests show my PC's are relatively secure. Thanks again.

351954 2005-05-05 04:42:00 The new version goes happily over the old one, and asks if you wish to retain your old settings. It did. TonyF (246)
