351826 2005-05-03 13:07:00 I have seen some previous posts on this but not quite covering what I wish to do.

I want to do a once-only transfer of files (images, Office docs, game files) from one laptop to a new one. Both run WinXP Pro.

Can I do this with a cable connection and if so, would I best use USB, ethernet or serial or parallel, etc? I am reasonably confident with the ideas of enabling file sharing and so on (partly from seeing the earlier posts) but am not sure where to start.

Any help much appreciated.

Probably the easiest and fastest is to get your self a crossover ethernet cable and plug er in to the ethernet ports, assuming you have the correct ports on each lappy. You can use the XP networking wizard to set up the connection but, my own suspicion of wizards and from what I've heard, the network wizard isn't one of MS's artworks.

351828 2005-05-03 13:24:00 Well firstly you could have asked me. Use an ethernet cable. You might need to set up the protocols for the network between the laptops. This is done by going to Network Connections (Control Panel - Network Connections) finding the connection that is connecting the two laptops. Right click and go to properties. There will be a list and under it will be Install and Uninstall and Properties. Make sure both computers have the same settings. If not, install the protocols on the laptop that doesn't have them to match the other. Next you will want to share the folder/drive that you want to transfer files from. This is done by right clicking on the item you wish to share. Next, click on the Share tab and click on New Share. Follow the on screen listing and click Ok. The last thing that might cause problems would be the computers not being on the same workgroup. To check the workgroup of each computer, go to My Computer, right click and go to Properties. Click on Computer Name and check that the Workgroup is the same (MSHOME is standard and the best to use). If they are not the same, one will have to be changed. To do this click on Change and type in the exact same as the other computer. It will require a restart. After that, both computers should talk. Click on My Network Places and click on "View Workgroup". You should see the folder/drive you shared. ProMaz (34)
351829 2005-05-03 13:45:00 if u have a cd-writer or a usb flash drive - copy your stuff using one of these - less hassle, & u got a backup as well... then copy from cd to laptop.
i do this for my customers every week - easy.

351830 2005-05-04 03:09:00 Since it's a one only, an Ethernet crossover cable will be the cheapest and best way. (Serial or laplink parallel cables cost more ;)). A USB "network" cable with wart is much more.

Even the MS wizards should get them talking in no time, so you can just drah\g and drop files or directories in the Network Neighbourhood window. ;)

351831 2009-03-03 07:14:00 I'd suggest another idea. When you establish a simple network connection between two laptops, you will be able to transfer files using PC File Transfer (http://www.pc-file-transfer.com/).
There are two panels in the program, one shows files and folders on the local computer, the other does the same for the remote computer. And then you can transfer files and folders from one laptop to another, or the other way around.
