352314 2005-05-05 09:32:00 I have a question that I can't answer for myself, so I thought I would throw it out to you lot :D

Recently, I had McAfee 2004 Antivirus and Nortons 2004 Antivirus listed in seperate auctions on Trademe. Now the Nortons sold rather easily, yet I still have the McAfee (they were both listed at approximately the same price).
Something I have also noticed in this forum is that approx every 2 or 3 days there is someone who has a problem with one Nortons product or another.
Yet everyone still wants Nortons.

WHY?

<Personally I wouldnt touch anything Nortons with a 40 foot barge pole>

352315 2005-05-05 09:38:00 Nothing wrong with Nortons. People who have probs with it, either dunno how to use it / configure it. Or they haven't got enough ram or something for it to work properly. Speedy Gonzales (78)
352316 2005-05-05 09:42:00 Marketing.

It is after all the number 1 (selling) anti-virus in the world, and the one people recorgnise.

And it seems that marketing can override just about anything, Of course I say that based purely on Speedies claims.

352317 2005-05-05 09:49:00 Perhaps the problem is that it isn't "Norton's" anymore, it is Symantec. Probably, the rot set in when they took over Peter Nortons enterprise? Terry Porritt (14)
352318 2005-05-05 09:53:00 Well I would rather buy something, than get something for free, which may not perform as good/well as an AV program u buy.

I've used Nortons (NIS 2003) for a while. And never had probs with it. And it's easy for me to configure/set up.

Besides, one of its services shutting down (the proxy service - which stops u from browsing) when I first installed it.

BUT that was easy to fix. And it hasn't shut it off since. Or when it feels like it lol.

352319 2005-05-05 10:28:00 well i have serval vers of nortons over the years and frankly its gotten worse every year (well almost). when nortons works it works great. the trouble is it dosn't stay that way. every ver i've had died at every 6-12 months. usually an uninstall/reinstall fixes it. however its got worse with the 2003 ver and from what i see the 2005 ver is no better.

people don't buy the product, they buy the name. its comman and looks good. after all how many times have you seen any adds on tv from NOD32, AVG etc ??
add to that that a lot of pc's come bundled with nortons most people stick to what they know (just like IE users ;) ).

edit: isn't the title ment to be "The PairOfDucks that is Nortons" ? isn't it duck shooting season on sat :D

352321 2005-05-05 10:48:00 Nortons is bloatware, large, intrusive and resource hungry.
I use PC Cillin which used to be a joke 5 years ago sold in dse as an elcheapo. The 2005 version is great, not perfect, I don't think there is such a thing but I much prefer it to nortons. Lean as a whippet and the updates are fed almost too regularly. Having said that I couldn't live without Ghost.

Or is it a case of the devil you know?

I havent had that much trouble with it. Well cant say I've seen Kaspersky or Bitdefender in shops. Can't buy them online, since I dont use credit cards.

Well true Nortons maybe bloatware, whats XP then? lol... I might as well use this 120GB for something. I hardly see the slowdown on an HT system.

I'm not too worried about an AV program, I get stuff all off the net besides XP / Office updates. I really use Nortons for the firewall, as I dont have a hardware firewall, or any other software based firewall right now.

ZA is OK I spose as a firewall, BUT nah I tried it once it screwed up my system.

And the last time I tried to install Zonealarm, it refused to install. All it did was create one huge temp 3 GB+ file, which took up most of my hdd, and I couldn't defrag or anything, till I found this useless file and deleted it.
