352516 2005-05-05 23:25:00 Hi Guys,
I have used Publisher a bit on a friends puter.
Its pretty useful and easy to use. I wonder if there is a free program/s that will do the same job.
I am wanting to do simple image and text stuff, pamphlets and the like.
Have tried the Gimp a few times but usually get stuck, frustrated and give up.
Cheers
Pete

352517 2005-05-06 05:59:00 Hi *Pete. A modern version of Word, say from 2000 on, will adequately do simple image and text stuff, pamphlets and the like.
Microsoft actually describe Word in its adverts now as being for word processing and publishing. You can certainly insert graphics, make pamphlets and brochures, labels, etc. I do quite a lot of small publishing and always do it on Word these days, even though we have Publisher 2000 and 2003 available.

352518 2005-05-06 06:10:00 Have you checked out Openoffice to see if it does what you require?

If you want to save yourself the download I can give you a copy on CD, That would require you pick it up from the Medic shop though.....

What are you planning to do with the end result?

GIMP is the very best free alternative out there. Yes, it isn't going to help if you don't know it and you need stuff in a hurry, but it is a damn fine piece of software. If you do persist with it, you will be very happy.

352522 2005-05-06 07:27:00 Pete, have a look at Scribus (http://www.scribus.org.uk/).

Open Office Writer will perform much the same as Word as long as your needs aren't too complex, but I'm a great believer in having the right tools rather than a singing, dancing, talking, card trick dog that can't bark or fetch sticks.

One thing you'll need for Scibus is Linux or a Mac with OS X and X11. You can run it from a bootable CD like mepis and save the files to a partition so they don't disappear when the ram drive is unloaded. There is work going on to port it to Windows but no timeframe for when this will be done.

352524 2005-05-06 08:00:00 PC world had Open office on one of its CD's last year, maybe you could try it from there. JustDudess (7148)
