| 352487 | 2005-05-05 23:07:00 | I just moved home from a student house at university. At the student house, I was hooked up to a network that used cable Internet. Everything worked fine. Now that I am home, my dad and I set up a network and my computer is hooked up to a hub. My parents use high speed phone Internet, so if I want to get on the Internet I have to first connect on my parents' computer. After I do that, my computer is connected to the Internet. Here is my problem: I can surf the Internet as long as my parents' computer first connects. Pretty much everything works. I can download, upload, etc. However, I can't load any sites that have to do with Hotmail or MSN on my computer. I also can't sign into MSN Messenger. On my parents' computer Hotmail loads up just fine and I can be on Messenger. Why is it that pretty much every site except these ones would work on my computer? These are things that I use very frequently, so it is killing me to be able to use basically every other website and program, but not Hotmail or MSN Messenger. I will be extremely thankful for any help you can provide. I will check back here, but if you would e-mail me at woodsdavid AT hotmail DOT com I would really appreciate it (I will check it on my parents' computer). |

| 352488 | 2005-05-05 23:14:00 | Have you scanned for viruses/spyware/adware ? Also what firewall are you using ie Hardware or Software firewall, because it may be blocking the ports MSN messneger needs access 2. What browser are you using ? | Overdrive_5000 (4950) | ||
| 352489 | 2005-05-05 23:23:00 | I am doing a virus/spyware scan now. I don't see how I could have gotten such a virus (computer worked fine when it was hooked up to the old network, and the first thing I did when it was hooked up the the current network was try to access MSN Messenger and it didn't work), but viruses are sneaky things so I will scan with Norton, Ad-Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy and maybe AVG. I normally use Firefox as my browser, but I checked more than once and Hotmail won't load in IE either. The ports thing seems likely to me. I don't really know much at all about firewalls. I don't have one, and I don't think my parents' use one. I could be wrong. Is there some way to check out this blocked port theory? |
