2005-05-07 05:28:00 | I use IrfanView to take screenshots, i.e. photos of what appears on screen. However, the hot key function does not work. Instead I use the time delay function. Is there another free program that allows me to take screenshots using a hot key? On the keyboard is a 'PrtScn' key - can this be used to take screenshots? I have tried but nothing happens. Thanks. - Steve_L Hi Steve_L Two great little freeware programs for you Do a search for GrabCaptureScreen or one called GrabClipSave, both by the same author. They both do an excellent job of capturing screens, windows or areas. JonB

2005-05-07 06:52:00 | We use Snagit at work which is a great tool from www.techsmith.com but it costs USD$40 The closest I've found to it on the net is ScreenPrint32 from Here (http://www.screenprint32.com). This gives you the setable option of picking either the screen, active window or a selectable area.

2005-05-07 08:41:00 | Hi Steve_L Two great little freeware programs for you . Do a search for GrabCaptureScreen or one called GrabClipSave, both by the same author . They both do an excellent job of capturing screens, windows or areas . JonB Thanks, JonB . Here is what I found via Google: FastStone Screen Capture ( . download . com/FastStone-Screen-Capture/3000-2192_4-10349164 . html" target="_blank">www . download . com) FastStone Free Capture (FSCapture) is a free image viewer, editor and screen capture that supports all major graphic formats including BMP, JPEG, JPEG 2000, GIF, PNG, PCX, TIFF, WMF, ICO and TGA . With its amazingly smooth and crystal-clear magnifier, every detail of images can be viewed gracefully in full screen without compromising the quality . Its Resizing, Rotating, Cropping, Color adjusting tools with Undo support enable image enhancement easier than ever . Its screen capturing allows you to capture anything on the screen within just a couple of mouse clicks . Its drag & drop enables you to drag images from windows, Internet browsers and other programs directly to this program . Version 1 . 5 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes . GrabClipSave ( . snapfiles . com/get/grabclipsave . html" target="_blank">www . snapfiles . com) GrabClipSave is a simple screen capture tool that will automatically save the screenshot to a specified directory, either in Windows . bmp, . png or in . jpg format . The file name can be customized with a prefix and incrementing digit . You can grab standard applications, Direct3D or OpenGL games . It makes use of standard Windows features: as soon as you press the PrtSc-key, the current screen is copied to the clipboard (or Alt+PrtScr for active window) . GrabClipSave sits in the background and waits for a bitmap in the clipboard - when there is a new one, it just saves it to disk in the specified format and file name . GrabCaptureScreen ( . snapfiles . com/get/GrabCaptureScreen . html" target="_blank">www . snapfiles . com) GrabCaptureScreen is a full featured screen capture program that supports 7 different capture modes, as well as fully automatic image saving . You can perform interactive captures, or simply use a keyboard hotkey to capture the area, window or selection, and automatically save the file to a specified folder (with auto-numbering and prefix) . GrabCaptureScreen supports the following capture modes: desktop, single (sub-) window, multi-monitor desktops, alternate monitor desktop, active window, rectangular area and fixed rectangle . The captures can be saved in different formats, including GIF and JPEG with additional compression and resizing features . Overall, this a very well designed screen capture tool, with excellent features and and easy to use interface . The above results are from the words you and Scouse gave . I am putting all of the above for others to see and for my future reference, but at the moment I must close down as we have friends over to see a DVD movie, so will have to read details and download later . :groan: This appears to be an interesting thread with enough suggestions to keep us all busy and entertained for awhile . :)

2005-05-08 01:39:00 | MWSnap is brilliant - give it a go . It is easy to use, and the hot key function works . But I am disappointed with the quality of the snapped photo since there is definite degradation . IrfanView produces better snaps, but as I said, the hot key does not work (even after updating to the latest version) . I have also downloaded FastStone Screen Capture, but the user interface is terrible and it freezes on my WinXP . Will try GrabCaptureScreen . . . . :groan: Any other ideas?

2005-05-09 04:18:00 | Just by the way, the hotkey screen capture in Irfanview does work.;) At least in W98 and W2000, versions 3.80 and 3.92 (I think). But you can't just set it up then close Irfanview. Start an Irfanview session then Options and select Capture Screen, and set up what you want. When you click [Start], after setting the options you want, Irfanview minimizes, and you can use Ctrl/F11 (or another hotkey you choose) to your heart's content. If you kill the Irfanview session, it no longer works. That's quite reasonable. ;) It's the simplest way to stop the timedelay mode. Ifanview does have "Help" : just Press F1 ( :help:  ) ... search it for "capture".

2005-05-09 10:09:00 | Graham - Thanks but I have done that always and the hot key does nothing. It is probably the keyboard that I am using, MS Media type - that has a different value assigned to the F11 key. Guess I could change the keyboard setting but since GrabCaptureScreen has better photo resolution than IrfanView, I won't bother. | Strommer (42) | |
