353335 2005-05-08 21:53:00 Dual RAID
The VIA K8T800Pro chipset incorporated two Serial ATA connectors with RAID 0(striping), RAID 1(mirroring), and JBOD(spanning) functions while the Promise 20378 controller provides another two Serial ATA and two UltraATA133 connectors for RAID 0(striping), RAID 1(mirroring), RAID 0+1, and multiple RAID functions.

is from the asus blurb on me new mutha! board, av8 delux,

ne body got preferences/info on which SATA connectors to use first? the VIA K8T800Pro or the Promise 20378 ??? is either quicker? better? was just going to set up raid as RAID 0 (new beastie gamer rig)

if i wanted to increase raid at a later date with ide hard drives would it be better to start off using the VIA chipset/connection first????

353336 2005-05-08 22:25:00 What O/S are you using?
If you are using XP whats wrong with setting up a software RAID config in Disk Management? Or you can use Disk Administrator in 2002.

Its an option if you want to look at it.

Edit: is this for a new computer with no IDE drives installed?

353337 2005-05-08 22:36:00 yup, brand new beastie to use as gaming rig/a bit of graphics play with photoshop, will be running xp pro sp2,

just in the build/putting together stage, tidying up wiring etc, 2x 74Gb Western Digital WD740GD Raptor SATA Hard Drives (my new toy, yes i know it ostentatious, i am building it for speed(?) or was trying to, damn the bucks - allow me this indulgence)

353338 2005-05-08 23:05:00 Well with XP its better to do a new install make a disk with the SATA drivers on them, (which are usually on the mobo cd), and install them (Press F6), when u do a clean install with XP .

And enable RAID in the BIOS . If the RAID is onboard .

I wouldnt trust RAID 0 . If one hdd goes/stuffs up, so does the other . You'll haveta start all over again . The drivers will be on the mobo for the SATA, and everything else .

Does the mobo support SATA and IDE RAID?? If SATA only, adding IDE hdds will make no diff . Altho u can add IDE hdds on the IDE connections, on a RAID mobo . For extra space .

I use a SATA hdd on this (NOT in RAID tho) as the master hdd . And an 80GB IDE for putting updates etc on, in case I format . Saves me getting all the downloads/updates all over again on the net .

353339 2005-05-08 23:36:00 Storage/RAID

South Bridge
- 2 x UltraDMA 133/100/66/33
- 2 x Serial ATA, support RAID 0, RAID 1, and JBOD
Promise 20378 RAID controller
- 1 x UltraDMA 133/100/66/33
- 2 x Serial ATA
- Support RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 0+1, and Multiple RAID

was gonna do RAID 0 for speed, not too fussed bout it stuffing out and re-downloading, am demoting the old AMD K6 down to role of MS Office/storage/back up box (longer term adding game server box into the fold as well)

was mainly wondering if there is any preference for going throught the south bridge or using the promise raid controller

353340 2005-05-09 00:12:00 the trouble is different raid controllers and all the different settings makes it hard to choose. i would have a look for any benchmarks done (storagereveiw.com??) between the controllers. just be aware different bios, different stripe settings and different types/sizes of data used can make a big difference.

personally i like the promise controllers. your mileage may vary ;)

edit: if in doubt benchmark it yourself and find the fastest, preferable with the least amount of cpu useage.

seems to have me heading in the right (i hope) direction, last question (yeah rite) is it worth using onboard LAN or usings a NIC???????????

they are the same thing (unless you need something special). onboard lan is often very basic but it will usually do everthing a home user could want.
