353137 2005-05-07 21:14:00 I have just got a new computer with WinXP Pro SP2. Downloaded Adaware SE v1.05 and did a first scan. Then Internet Expl won't work. Just keep getting "page not available". Deleted Adaware, did a System Restore and everything's fine again.

I had the same thing happen (several times) on my old comp and thought it was just some sort of glitch. But everything's new now and the same thing is is happening. Is there some sort of security setting in Adaware that I am not aware of?

Ideas welcome.

Cheers

353138 2005-05-07 22:20:00 you might have deleted your start page, what was it?
when do you get the page not found message? is it every page to try to go it.

and to stop this spyware and adware, use firefox

353139 2005-05-07 23:32:00 Somehow, Adaware removes the DNS settings every time after scanning. Adaware doesn't work well for me for quite a while now and I don't use it anymore. Instead, I'm using Spybot. bk T (215)

353143 2005-05-08 04:01:00 I do not know what the problem is but I do not think ANYONE has been very helpful here.Spybot does not replace AdaWare as they are complimentry and
anyone running one or other thinking they are safe is fooling themselves.
I would advise a bit of "wait and see" for some fruitful advice.Millions of us
run these apps and they work. There is the odd glitch and it can be sorted.
You just need to wait until the right advice comes along.

353144 2005-05-08 04:55:00 Please give a BIG round of applause to kjaada who not only achknowleged he had nothing worthwhile to contribute but also managed to designate everybody elses input as worthless. Please keep this in mind if he/she has to ask for help in the future,he/she considers your input as worthless.

We need more people like this.

Anyhow, That aside, Adawere itself won't disable your browsers ability to display webpages, but it will remove software that has reconfigured how your OS access the internet, Its highly likely that you installed software on your comp that had some "you beaut" parasite software, and seeing as you managed to carry this issue between comps then it is higly likely that you installed the application on both.

Run the winsock2 fix on your new computer, if its all well after that then what I said above is true, and you caused your own problems.

353145 2005-05-08 06:16:00 sorry, did someone say that adaware clears DNS settings? damn, thats what made my jetstream not go last month... Kindel (6640)
353146 2005-05-08 06:45:00 I think kjaada's advice was very sound.

Nobody was offering advice on the problem, but instead leapt in with their own preferences (or prejudices) for anti-spyware or browsers.

Changing programs need not be the first or even the best approach for resolving computer problems, unless the issue is one that is well identified as a glitch specific to that particular issue/software.

Resolving "page not available" issues does not start with wholesale changes to the comp. It starts with review of internet connection settings, pings of IP addresses and other diagnostic procedures to find out what is wrong.

Once every six months or so one of my computers refuses to resolve domain names but will opens sites from an IP address. The cause is loss of DNS settings, which I re-enter (takes less than a minute) and all is well for another six months.

It is not worth my while to even worry why that happens, much less change browsers or spyware programs.

Cheers
