353463 2005-05-09 03:40:00 Firstly, sorry for all the posts about the network we have been trying to get going here but it is (or has been) very complicated. I have got the internet to both the laptop and desktop now, so is not a problem. The problem now is getting file and printer sharing working. Usually I am very able to get a network up and running but this has stumped me.

The laptop is running on a wireless network which connects to a wireless access point. That AP is connected to an ADSL router which the desktop also connects to. A picture is worth a thousand words, so here is a diagram of the network: Click Here (img242.echo.cx).

Both computers have been set to the following settings:

IP: 192.168.1.XXX
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.2 (The IP of the ADSL router is 192.168.1.2)
Preferred DNS: 192.168.1.2

Both are in the "MSHOME" workgroup and both are running Windows XP Pro which simple file sharing disabled.

I open the "Network Places" and go to "View computers in my workgroup" and I can see both the desktop and laptop on both computers in that screen. I click on the opposite computer (So if I'm at the laptop, I click on the desktop) and get an error strait away, with no time delay. The error says: \\Craig is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Logon failure: the user had not been granted the requested logon type at this computer. (Here is a picture of the error too: Click Here (img23.echo.cx).

What can I do to fix this? All that is wanted is file sharing (sharing drives) and printer sharing.

Thanks again you guys

James

353464 2005-05-09 03:57:00 I will take it you have gone through all the usual "file and print sharing" stuff.

So can you map a network drive??

Sometimes you have to wait a bloody long time before they will start talking(I dont know why).

btw. there is a small break in your ethernet cable between your access point and router. :D

[Edit:] shouldnt the DNS be that of your ISP

353465 2005-05-09 04:39:00 What "usual" stuff? Like sharing the drives, giving permissions and so on? Yes, I have.

What do you mean "can map a network drive"?

353467 2005-05-09 04:44:00 You have got an appropriate user account set up on both computers? And you do a network logon? MS are starting to set security restrictions by default. I Graham L (2)

353471 2005-05-18 14:09:00 Blank Password Restrictions (doesn't apply to the guest account)

If you want to disable the restriction against logging on to the network without a password, you can do so through Local Security Policy. The policy setting that controls blank password restriction can be modified using the Local Security Policy or Group Policy MMC snap-ins. You can use either tool to find this policy option at Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options. The name of the policy is Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only. It is enabled by default.

Also of course you need a user account on the remote machine...
You need to be sharing something on the target machine...
You need to check the Windows XP Firewall.

Also check (although this usually has the Everyone group in there)

The users do not have permission to connect to the remote computer. To resolve this problem: on the remote computer, select Administrative Tools>Local Security Settings>Local Policies>User Rights Assignment, right-click on Access this computer from the network>Properties>Add Users or Groups, add everyone or any users you want to be able to access the computer from the network.

353472 2005-05-18 14:16:00 Thanks for your detailed help there. I have been talking to someone on SilverServer (a New Zealand hub) on DC++. He said the same thing about the Local Security Policy yet, when I try to add the other computer to Access this computer from the network, I get a "failed to save local policy databace". This has completly stumped me, getting very inoying. And I don't want there to be no password over the network, I want it so that if you want to connect to the other computer (no matter which one your on) you need to know the password and user name of the other computer, like a normal, simple network.

Btw, sorry, forgot to say, I get that error about failed to save the local policy thingy on both computers.
