353320 2005-05-08 14:27:00 :help: Desktop PC. Win98SE, 256M RAM, < 1/4 HDD used. Office 2000. Office applications, email & websurfing use only - no gaming.
All OS & O2K SP's & updates installed. NAV - update check daily, SpyBot S&D - update check daily, AdAware - same, all mail is filtered & vetted with MailWasher & b9 before any download. System has been scanned for viruses/malware etc., nothing found.

The PC freezes at varying times after startup, anything from a few seconds to maybe up to an hour. Cursor / any application totally freeze - unable to access Task Manager or even Ctrl Alt Del reboot. Only way to restart is power down. Seems to be associated with mouse cursor movement but is not mouse caused? Have tried, seperately, MS Optical trackball, PS/2 MS Trackball, and Tablet. Same result. In Safe Mode have been able to complete a ScanDisc & Defrag, both without the machine freezing.
Hope somebody can point me in the right direction - the damn thing (the other one, not this one) isn't much good for anything at the moment.

353321 2005-05-08 15:45:00 Reformat it....I used to do it about every six months when I ran W98 - it got almost addictive

W98 is vulnerable to all sorts of accumulations of errors ,and reformatting is fun - once you get he hang of it.

353323 2005-05-08 20:21:00 Hard lockup's can be associated with memory (RAM) issues. Do you have one or two sticks of RAM installed? If you have two, try taking out one at a time and see if that helps. There is also a program that runs off a floppy (or CD) that will test your RAM for errors - Memtest86 (http://www.memtest86.com/). 353324 2005-05-08 20:43:00 Thanks,
Will try memtest first. Reformating if no satisfaction there. Will report outcome, or seek more help.

353325 2005-05-08 22:09:00 When the computer freezes, is it bringing up any error messages?

Im inclined to go with the RAM problem as well, if it is that then a reformat won't help.

353326 2005-05-09 03:12:00 Thanks,
No, there has never been any error messages or blue screen or any other MSWin type maladies. Will persue the memtest line of attack first.

353327 2005-05-09 03:25:00 Do you use a Registry Cleaner regularly? I think they are essential to keep your computer from not going to dead ends in the registry and freezing. zqwerty (97)
