2005-05-08 00:15:00 I've got 2 computers connected through a router. I want to know why the shared folders on the XP home box, brand new installation won't let me copy files from the other box. I've been to properties & unticked read only, but as soon as I click apply & close it, then open it again, it's gone back to read only. Any ideas ?

I had this working all ok on a buggered installation yesterday, hence the brand new one.

2005-05-08 01:07:00 Are you running firewalls on the individual computers? If so, have you opened the IP range for your local network? wuppo (41)
2005-05-08 01:10:00 I can transfer a file into the folder if I open the properties box, clear read only, click apply & then leave the properties box open. Yes it is firewalled in both directions. As soon as I close the properties box the folder goes back to read only. Phil B (648)
2005-05-09 01:10:00 In theory, the readonly attribute on a folder has nothing to do with controlling write access to the folder contents. See: support.microsoft.com wuppo (41)
2005-05-09 04:30:00 There is a Microsoft troubleshooting file sharing pdf file that can be downloaded and may help some:

2005-05-10 11:10:00 Problem solved thanks, I thought I'd have a look at cleaning up the drive after doing the installs of all the software. I found that after getting rid of all the temp files ect it was fragmented by 30%. I defragged it twice & got it down to zero. All ok. Do the basics before bleating, thats my lesson.
