354096 2005-05-11 03:42:00 My latest computer is a HP 1620A with 256mb of 266mhz DDR SD Ram and has Windows XP. If I read the figures right its either PC 2700 or PC2100. The board has two slots. Can I -
a. Have the 256 in one slot and 512 in the other?
b. Kingmax 512mbDDR-SDRAM 400MHZ is cheap. Would I be better of installing that and taking out the existing 256 of ram or is it possible the 400MHZ is to powerful for the board? I understand the ram would run at the slower speed if I tried to put the 266 and 400mhz together.
c. Would it be better to get either another 256/512 of the 266 or whatevers compatible according to the Ascent website?
I really just want to speed up windows.
Thanks, Clod :)

354097 2005-05-11 04:07:00 You may have to find out how much ram the motherboard can handle first, before u decide to spend money on some more ram, which may or may not work.

It not only depends on the ram, on how fast XP boots. It also depends on the speed of the system, as in mhz, or ghz.

How fast is the system??

a: Yes
b: Yes regardless, it will run at 266mhz as that is your MB speed.
c: Probably better as you can be sure its compatible then.

354099 2005-05-11 12:01:00 I read somewhere that it is better to but the largest RAM in the first slot, and then the smaller in the next slot. Is this true? mejobloggs (264)

Don't think so. You are suppose to install your RAM in a matching slot (according to ym Dell manual). Say you have 4 slots of memory, labeled with 1,2,3, and 4. You are suppose to install RAM pair on 1 and 3 first, then 2 and 4 to get the maximum performance (not too sure what do they mean by "maximum performance").

Cheers :)

All depends on your motherboard. Mine 1 and 3 is dual channel. 2 and 4 normal.
My old board it was use 1 and 2 then whatever...

354102 2005-05-11 22:59:00 Thanks for the help, folks. Its a 2.8 Pentium so shouldn't be a problem there. I'll probably go for same speed ram 256 or 512 stick. It only has two slots taking up to 1000 ram so I wont have any worries about where to put it.
Cheers, Clod
