354003 2005-05-10 23:10:00 My modem won't install. I am using W-2k OS, my modem was working fine, then I started getting a message when trying to go on line...The auddio device is in use by another application,,, , The modem still worked OK, but then it quit. I attempted to uninstall and re-install, and got stalled. After uninstalling, when I rebooted, Found New Hardware wizzard started. When it offered to search for a driver, when I clicked OK, it froze. I used Device Manager to end the wizzard and tried to install with Add remove Hardware. Same result. When offered to search for a driver and I clicked OK, it froze. I tried to install another modem and got the same result. I got as far as the Search for a better driver, browsed to the CD driver file and was told , of course, the location didn't have any driver . I tried over and over, and noticed every time I tried, the modem had a number after it. I got up to modem # 27 or so. Device manager says the modem is not configured properly. And when I click to reinstall the driver, and it offers to search for a driver, if I click OK it freezes. If I pick display a list of drivers, and have disc, and pick a location , it freezes. The system still works OK, but no modem. Any advice or even a hint of where I might start looking for the error would be very appreciated. Thanks, Matthew matthew (803)
354004 2005-05-11 06:49:00 Hi Matthew, Welcome to PressF1 :)

Well it sounds like you have had a good go with this so far. A couple of questions/suggestions:

1. When you said you tried to install another modem, did you mean you pulled out your current modem and installed a different one, or you just picked a different software description for the modem under the locate driver dialog box?

2. The CD that you tried to install the driver from, was it the CD provided with the modem? Have you tried to download a new driver from the manufacturer's website?

3. Had you made any hardware/peripheral device changes to your system prior to this "audio device is already in use" message?

4. Have you tried to uninstall all instances of the modem under Hardware Device Manager, shut the PC down, physically remove the modem (I'm taking this is a PCI modem?) and then rebooted the machine. Then shut the machine down again and reinstall the modem and let Windows rediscover it? You may wish to have a freshly downloaded new driver saved ready for this step.

5. Another option is to move the modem to a different PCI slot, although if it worked before and you haven't added any more devices to the machine, this may not make a difference.

6. Have you scanned with a reputable antispyware program (Ad-ware SE, Spybot Search & Destroy) and antivirus program to make sure nothing else is interferring with the modem connection/installation?

Wow! 27! I'd do as Jen says and start by removing all instances of modems from device manager. In fact I would boot into safe mode first as it will then show all previously loaded drivers for modems. Remove the lot. Then start again using the correct driver for your modem. If you have lost the original driver CD - check the brand and model number and download one - but you need to ensure it is the correct driver.

354006 2005-05-11 08:38:00 I agree with the others. Start from scratch. From your error message I guess this is a voice/data/fax modem that has got a bit confused with Windows, visa versa or another piece of hardware like a sound card or its driver.

Use a fresh driver install from the net.

It would be helpful to know the modems name, model and if possible chip and revision number.

A good site to troubleshoot and identify modems is Modem Help. Have your pop up blocker ready they have a Presision Time advert that doesn't go away. I guess they need some funds but.

With a new modem, preferably an external one.

354008 2005-05-11 09:19:00 Sorry about the mistyped link, Modem Help (www.modem-help.com). In a rush to get din dins.

Another thing is not to let Windows search for a driver but to click Browse or Have disk and point it to the driver. The driver will have a .inf extension and for your OS will be in a folder called (Windows) NT/2000/XP or any combination of those and also possibly buried in a folder called EN.

354009 2005-05-11 10:17:00 Yes, I uninstalled all modems with device manager, removed the modem, rebooted, with no modem, installed in new PCI slot, tried to install a different modem, had a newly downloaded driver, but every time, when I click "Search for driver' IT FREEZES. I use Kaspersky'S anti virus, up to date, and Adaware, No virus and no spyware. My wife and son use the system and do a lot of stuf, so I dont know what they may have downloaded or installed. Maybe time to reinstall W2k? Thanks, Matthew matthew (803)

You are the grand prize winner!! The second modem I tried to install was a known good one, but it was a USB modem. W2k would only install it as a "USB Device". Would not recognise it as a modem. After formatting and re-installing the OS, I tried a third modem and it was e-z street all the way. The old modem was the problem. Many thanks to all for your advice and , what I needed most, encouragement, Matthew
