353964 2005-05-10 12:23:00 Howdy folks,
Now that I have your attention, its a small problem I have forgotten how to fix.
Using dialup with KOL.
Was getting speeds of 52, but they have a new phone number now.
After I changed it, the balloon says I am connected at 921.6Kbps.
I like the other one.
What do I have to change it back to the more familiar connection speed.
Cheers.

353967 2005-05-10 12:36:00 Its telling you the speed in which the modem is communicating with your computer, normally an indication that you have the wrong driver.

Does KOL install software on your system in order to access their services by any chance?

353968 2005-05-10 12:43:00 The software is available to download but I didnt use it.
I did a maual connection wizard thingy.
In the modem properties there is a dropdown box with different maximum speeds (bps) 921600 was selected so I guess thats what its telling me.
Should I change that, and if so, what is the recommended.
Cheers.

353969 2005-05-10 13:49:00 Just set the maximum speed to the maximum, that is 115200. However, this figures does not actually represent the Internet connection speed. Whenever I am connected to the Internet, there is a balloon stating that I am connected at speed 45.2Kbps or so, the actual speed is only around 5Kbps. The only hope to truly get more than 56 Kbps speed is through broadband.

Cheers :)

45.2 kilobits per second IS around 5 kilobytes per second.

353971 2005-05-11 02:53:00 If the maximum transfer speed is at 921600 bps, that is fine. That is the internal transfer speed between the modem register and the CPU. The 115200 is the highest transfer speed available through a serial port UART on a PC. Your internal modem is not connected through a serial port, so it will transfer at any speed allowed by the PCI bus. That internal transfer speed is independent of the external rate of the modem talking to the telephone line. If you are using V90 the maximum will be 56kbps.
That's determined by the standard. The actual external rate is determined by the line condition, up to 56kbps.

There will be a setting which lets you see the connect speed rather than the internal transfer speed.

353972 2005-05-11 05:53:00 incorrect drivers? on my old external modem i used to get 115Kbps, but i found out that i had wrong drivers, as long as it works dont worry about it. :) Prescott (11)
353973 2005-05-11 06:40:00 Thanks for the informative reply Graham.
I sort of figured I was seeing the transfer speed and not the connect speed.
I just couldnt word it like you.
Can you remember where the setting is so I can see the connect speed?
Cheers.
