353708 2005-05-09 19:00:00 I am interested in purchasing a notebook and really needed some suggestions....
I am mainly going to use it for browsing the web and investing in my stocks... I also plan to use the office applications and most likely listen to some music/movies...I am not sure what specs I should be looking for...I have seen some range from $700- $1000... Not sure if I can get a decent one around that price...

Thank you for any suggestions.

353709 2005-05-09 21:56:00 I've raved about my recent purchase, and for what you want to do I'm sure the specs will be adequate:

Asus A4500L for $1500.00 (Celeron 2.90) with 256k RAM. I bought another ram chip for $100. You can get a Pentium chip version for about $900 more, but I thought it simply wasn't worth it.

We use ours for Office and some Graphics work, and I've tried it on the Net and it does fine.

It's a tad slower to load apps, but no noticeable difference in performance thereafter while multi-tasking, than my P4 2.4 512k RAM

353712 2005-05-11 06:03:00 what are the celerons like? or is it worth while to get a centino 1.4 or 1.6? Prescott (11)
353713 2005-05-11 06:12:00 are you referring to an M series celeron or a Laptop using the desktop celeron cpu?(like Gregs)

If I can offer my 2 cents, If you go with an item using a desktop celeron you get a speedy comp for dirt cheap, even if the cpu isn't in the same league as a p4.

If you look at the M range, then the price difference isn't enough to warrent the performance lost, slimline laptops with 1.6/1.7 Pentium M cpu's and 512mb ram are at an excellent price.

Well, they are in the Asus range anyhow.

353715 2005-05-11 14:47:00 How long does the battery last before the need to recharge?

The battery in mine is supposed to give up to 3 1/2 hours, but the best I've experienced is 1 hour 20 minutes.

I'm not too fussed about it, but thought what the heck and phoned local Asus support - they said for me to send it to them and they'll replace it, no problemo. Fortunately for me the local support centre is just 15 minutes away so I'll just drop it off and pick the new one sometime soon.

I mention that only to say that Asus warranty is excellent.
