353877 2005-05-12 10:35:00 Could some one tell me the DNS info of Paradise, Actrix & Clear?, Thanks :), just in case orcons go pear shape
Naming conventions are usually pretty standard. Some have more than others.

tamas:/local/etc/namedb/pri# for ii in 1 2 3 4; do for isp in actrix.co.nz clear.net.nz orcon.net.nz paradise.net.nz; do host ns$ii.$isp; done; done;
ns1.actrix.co.nz has address 203.96.16.35
ns1.clear.net.nz has address 203.97.33.14
ns1.orcon.net.nz has address 210.55.12.1
ns1.paradise.net.nz has address 203.96.152.4
ns2.actrix.co.nz has address 203.96.16.36
ns2.clear.net.nz has address 203.97.37.14
ns2.orcon.net.nz has address 210.55.12.2
ns2.paradise.net.nz has address 203.96.152.12
ns3.actrix.co.nz has address 203.96.16.121
Host ns3.clear.net.nz not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
ns3.orcon.net.nz has address 210.55.239.133
Host ns3.paradise.net.nz not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
Host ns4.actrix.co.nz not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
Host ns4.clear.net.nz not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
ns4.orcon.net.nz has address 219.88.250.190
Host ns4.paradise.net.nz not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)

353878 2005-05-12 11:21:00 Can anybody explain why a small number of users might have problems with an ISPs DNS when the majority do not?

What actually happens to their connection that does not happen to the others? I'm having trouble getting to grips with this concept, though clearly it is affecting some people.

Are there individual configuration options that could influence connectivity?

Cheers

353879 2005-05-12 21:15:00 Can anybody explain why a small number of users might have problems with an ISPs DNS when the majority do not?Usually idiots with firewalls blocking traffic from those servers.

It goes something like this:

User wants to go to www.stupidsite.xx.xx
DNS Request out --> where is www.stupidsite.xx.xx
DNS Server responds --> it's at IP xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
ZoneAlarm : ALERT: "alien.xtra.co.nz is trying to hax your jiggahurtz"
User: HOLY CRAP: "BLOCK"

We get e-mails on an almost daily basis from fruits running personal firewall software wanting to know why "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" (our NS IP's) are trying to "hack" them.

That said Xtra's DNS servers are running extremely old and somewhat deprecated versions of the DNS software, they are also known to ignore standard TTL's etc so often cache old information.
