353892 2005-05-10 05:55:00 November 2004 NZPC World recommended www.uksecurityonline.com/husdg/windowsxp/disableservices.htm as having a helpful list of every MS service along with detailed information to help decide what can be safely disabled. Entered the site in address bar clicked enter and this site came up secure.xcalibre.co.uk/ with no links to anything remotely ressembling what I am looking for. Any help please OR can anyone provide a more accessible site to help me decide what services do what and which can/cannot be disabled. Thanks. katharinem (3459)
353893 2005-05-10 06:03:00 Normally I would send someone to the infamous blackviper website of http://www.blackviper.com/ for tweaking the services, but I see that it is offline for some reason.

There is another site that may help - Services Guide for Windows XP (www.theeldergeek.com).

353895 2005-05-10 08:14:00 I agree with Jen on this one and can definitely recommend the Black Viper site.
Else another alternative site HERE (www.theeldergeek.com)
Just remember that if you plan Manually Updating windows, a couple of services that are listed as leaving disabled, should stay on automatic as Windows Update depends on them and arent shown as dependencies.

One was cryptography / cryptographic services
Cant remember the 2 others....

What ever you do, DO NOT SHUT DOWN "RPC - Remote Procedure Call".
you will regret it if you do.

Visited his site last week and it was "under construction", must have been for some time... I followed his suggestions for disabling W2K services and didn't encounter any problems. Hope he's back online soon as I want to check a few more items. Can't quite remember his infamy. :o Tom McB (832)

A week or so back I went to post the link and found it taken by some Domain?? .com. The name seemed to ring a bell as one being involved in less than savory practices. So my guess is BV is reconstructing the site from scratch.

A good place to look for tips and links is Sakefoot's services (snakefoot.fateback.com). Lots of goodies in there for tweakes, install/repair and user management too.

353900 2005-05-10 10:59:00 Thanks for all the help. I have used blackviper previously - checked his site earlier and found the underconstruction notice - actually printed out a couple of pages of his stuff a few months ago, but would like a few more details so that I can understand the technical jargon a bit better. I have also found
www.techspot.com which explains things in more detail. Thanks for that hint bob doe nz.
