2005-05-12 10:25:00 | Since I did not what to take my other thread on Laptop Suggestions/feedback off topic so I started this one: In my other thread GF Said: Laptops with fast Pentium "desktop" CPUs in them often have severe overheating problems. If that is true then why in the hell are they still putting in desktop CPUs in to laptops when they have this problem??? (which in turn cause users a lot of headack when they get one & when users are trying to choose one that does not have a desktop" CPU in it) ????? :badpc:

2005-05-12 13:28:00 | Because people think a notebook with a 3 GHz CPU is "cool"? www.pcworld.com It's plain physics. Fast CPU's generate a lot of heat. Notebooks can't get rid of the heat like a desktop can. So either the CPU steps down a lot in speed, or it gets very hot.

2005-05-12 13:38:00 | A 3ghz laptop sounds pretty cool to me... Anyhow, the vast majority of over heating laptops are due to clogged vents, either through dust and debris,or people blocking the vents due to ignorance, sitting them on their lap is a fine example.....

2005-05-15 07:42:00 | Well we know its hotter, and they can be cooler, and it may be said that cheaper materials may make a product and better cooling may be more expensive. In such cases of this or similar i guess they would analyse its viability e.g. income/expense or the value it has to you for the value it has to them. Why do they sell cars that are less safe or sell laptops when according to news.bbc.co.uk 70% of people using laptops may have chiropractic problems. Note: New standards being suggested include splitting the screen from the keyboard or so forth to make laptops ergonomically better, among other ideas.

I wonder how many desktop users also have chiropractic problems? The reason laptops are sold is because people got sick of lugging a huge desktop and CRT monitor around wherever they needed to work. You are correct though, the manufacturer will look at the cost/benefit of producing laptops with desktop cpu's and the major benefit to them is cost. |

2005-05-15 08:14:00 | isnt a centrino 1.6Ghz equivalent to a 2.8ghz p4? so why have the low ghz rating if they are still the same performance to a desktop P4 cpu Its all part of the mhz myth or should it be the ghz myth. By running a chip with lower clock speed they gain two things in a laptop 1) better battery life, 2) less heat generated. And it so happens those pentium M chips run more efectively unlike there power hungry cousins. Funny thing when apple tried to explain the myth to intel, intel said bull****, they have since changed their mind heres a link (www.google.co.nz) from google, pick one to read. AMD has always been a firm believer in this. And don't worry i have already got the bandages ready, as I know i will be shot down
