354254 2005-05-12 03:03:00 I recently updated my XP Home Edition to SP-2. This is about the third time that I have done this in the last year with the same results each time. My system goes unstable. I had hoped that MS had repaired or updated some previous issues. I should have learned my lesson the first time. My PC will lock hard on sp2 with no consistency as to when, length of time after boot, or running a software application. Each time I have had to do a system restore to a previous time before SP2 and each time the system maintained without a single lock. I have tried updating the motherboard bios, hard drive driver update, and I am running Trend Micro Suite (used to be McAfee). I also run Spybot and Adware on a regular basis and I don’t believe that I have spyware. I don’t know what to do now, as the system will not restore to any event and still remains unstable. I am thinking that it may be time to upgrade the board, CPU, and RAM anyway but I am still worried that won’t correct the issue. Hawkflyer (8097)
354255 2005-05-12 03:10:00 Can you download and run everest home edition, then post your hardware specs (Everest will create a detailed list). Metla (12)
354256 2005-05-12 04:10:00 I am not sure this is what you had in mind but...This is a great utility. I have never seen such a complete list of specs. I dare not include the entire list on this reply. Is there anything I can do for a more compact version?

354257 2005-05-12 04:21:00 Thats plenty of info, What I was looking for was your specific Motherboard and cpu, both of which are clearly identifed, I just done a quick google to see if there were any widespread damage reports of the same combination and sp2, This doesn't apear to be the case.

If you were keen you could update your bios, and update all your drivers if you haven't done so,though the lack of info on Google means this may be a waste of time. Can't hurt to try if you have an upgrade in the works.

The only other issue (off the top of my head) is what your installing sp2 from,is it the exact same package used each time,or a fresh download of sp2?

354258 2005-05-12 06:55:00 One thing to be careful of is to shut down any Antivirus program completely you have running before installing SP2 (making sure you are off the internet at this stage). Are you getting the SP2 drip fed via the MS Update site or have you downloaded the complete SP2 as a single exe and are installing it manually? Jen (38)
354259 2005-05-12 07:01:00 Or do you have a disc ex PC World mag.? Cicero (40)
354260 2005-05-12 18:16:00 SP2 was downloaded prior to install. I did not disable my Trend Micro Virus scan or web connection.

I am thinking that it maybe more related to a timing error that hoses the CPU. The internal clock has never been quite right. Being so spratic on system lock-up, could this be an area to consider?

354261 2005-05-12 21:49:00 Hi,

you mentioned that you have updated your 'hard drive drivers' Are you referring to the VIA Hyperion chipset drivers? If not then I strongly suggest that you try this. The other problem with the Apollo Pro 133 chipset is that it often had problems with AGP 4x, if you can disable this in the bios it's worth a go. The other 2 suspects are your video drivers and sound drivers, but problems with the latter will usually at least produce a crash dump.

354262 2005-05-12 23:31:00 Each time I have had to do a system restore to a previous time before SP2

have you tried a fresh install of XP ?

most of the time when service pack cause problems the system either has incompatible drivers (or major software) or is in generally poor shape to start with.

save all data, format, reinstall XP, install SP2, install upto date drivers and programs.

354263 2005-05-16 20:25:00 For all of those that have helped me so far and gave me there best, I would like to say thank you very much .

Here is what I have discovered about the lockups . HP PSC 2410 Photosmart all in one printer connected (via USB) into computer, computer locks up . Printer unplugged from computer system runs stable without any hiccups . Updated drivers did not help .

Does anybody know if a print server interface would help to resolve this as I want to hook up a second PC anyway?

Thanks again .
