| 354587 | 2005-05-13 06:35:00 | Taste?????? Alot of effert went into trying to fix that problem. Banged head on wall, head got saw, no other result. I suspect Chill ended up feeling much the same. I was hoping that the fix would b called FC4 OK, sounds like slackware is not for me. Mandrake had issues with me wanting to use the trackpad AND the USB mouse wherever possible, so it was just another can of worms really. Meanwhile i checked the fedora site, and it seems that FC4 test3 is available! Do i feel like living dangerously??? :p If I were you I would just wait the six weeks or so untill FC4 comes out. I know Jen is running one of the rc's but the dont call em candidates for nothing :) |

Do i feel like living dangerously??? :pAnd you will be living dangerously ;) As Sam I Am said, they aren't called test release for nothing :p Bugs are to be expected and reported if they are new. I had FC4 test 1 running for a bit, had some major bugs right up (couldn't load the desktop) so you had to know what you were doing and where to look for the fix (and the patch was already available!). KDE looked quite a bit incomplete (for starters the KDE Control Panel was missing off the KMenu and could only be launched via the terminal). I subsequently went on to completely kill Konqueror so I couldn't browse my directories with a GUI. By this stage the test 2 had been released so I didn't spend much time figuring out what was the cause behind that. I only run test releases on my play machine so it doesn't affect my main system and routine use. The test releases do get better as they progress ... so do you feel lucky? :D |

| 354590 | 2005-05-13 22:55:00 | Before i replace FC3, which is a perfectly good OS except for the fact it refuses to co-operate with my flaptops sound gear, i thought i'd see if anyone has any words of warning regarding these 2 disks i just burnt of Slackware 10.1 Otherwise, FC3 is in its final hours, (unless there is a comeback of course) :D Why FC3 must go (forums.pcworld.co.nz) This is one challenge was lost Yeah, go for Simply Mepis from a live cd and see how it goes detecting your hardware. A friend loves it cos it detected his winmodem, and his usb floppy... he's a pretty happy chappy. |

| 354591 | 2005-05-13 23:00:00 | OK, I admit it. Most people I know who have used it hate it... Actually I have Slackware running here in the form of VectorLinux... and it runs well. I have great respect for Slackware. :2cents: :@@: |

| 354592 | 2005-05-14 02:59:00 | Agreed, DD (tm). ;) But there's a difference between a raw Slackware installation and a pre-configured/guided installation which uses Slackware archive files. I only used Slackware the second time because I wanted a minimal server to run one device (the SCSI tape drive) and RedHat 7.1 "refused" to be cut down enough to fit on a 300MB disk. |

| 354593 | 2005-05-14 08:08:00 | Personthingy, You mentioned that Knoppix had successfully detected all of your hardware and it seems from your post that the only downer about it was that it is a Live distro. If you check here (bofh.be) you will find instructions for doing a hard drive install. Could be worth a go especially if you like Knoppix and it gives you what you require. |

Now why did i think it was going to be a horendously manual process to install from the live disk? It looks so simple that even i couldn't stuff it up! Might take in some sleep first, as i only just got back from working at pub! |

The command was unknown to it :( It would appear that the instructions supplied in that wonderful web page linked to above are therefore obsolete. |
