| 354706 | 2005-05-13 07:55:00 | I have Two hard drives, a 160gb and a 80gb. Together, they make up 6 drives on my computer, C drive (windows), Music, Movies, Programs, Personal Documents and CD Images. I have now given up on backing up my CD's on the computer (which the Images drive was used for) and realise my Music drive only has 2gb's left which I will use up very quickly. Is it possible to re-organise the partitions, so I get rid of the Images drive and give the extra space to the Music drive (or partition). If so, please please please tell me I can do this in windows and don't get partition magic or somthing like that. If not, I will copy all the information over to another computer and then join the partitions by deleting them and yea ... But I would like to see if I can do what I first mentioned. Thanks James |

If I read your post right, your problem is not one of lack of overall space once you delete your images, but rather that you want to merge the Image and Music partitions. Why bother?....you can achieve the same result by renaming the two partitions so that Music becomes Music1 and CD Images becomes Music2.... or whatever names you fancy. The end result will be as good as merging partitions with no risk of fouling up. When I first started partitioning my drives I also gave them names according what I thought I might put in them, but it became a nuisance and I reverted to lettered drives - C, D, E, F, etc. with no other identification. It's never been a problem, even with my present two HDs and ten partitions plus two CD drives. Yes, Partition Magic would do a very good job of deleting/merging partitions, but it isn't infallible if the operater isn't experienced. As for rearranging partitions within Windows, I have no experience of that, But someome in a recent post here said that if you try to do it you stand to lose everything on that drive. | 354710 | 2005-05-14 03:11:00 | In any partitioning operation you run the risk of losing the lot . :rolleyes: It's not a software problem; it's a people problem . People make mistakes . :eek: Unless the two partitions you want to merge are immediately adjacent I don't think that the standard partitioners can do it . (In a standard partitioner you could delete both, then make a new one in the newly freed space . Of course this would delete all the data in them . ) I'm not sure if a commercial or open-source partitioner can move all the data between separated partitions --where would it put the gigabytes? Anyway, I shudder to think of the probability of a catastrophic error . Mr Murphy's celebrated law would have a clause to enforce a car driving into a power pole while you are doing this . ;) |
