354496 2005-05-12 12:07:00 Ok the problem that I have is I bought a new computer today, it is a Packard Bell iXtreme E301 anyways.... I bring to your attention that the sound is working awesomely through the speakers, but as soon as I plug in the headdphones it is all jittery at ½ volume or above through the headphones. I plugged these headphones into other sources eg. another computer and stereo etc... and they end up working fine!
I hav absolutely no ideas on this one... hav ya got any clue!
Any help on this matter would be awesome!
Cheers

354497 2005-05-12 13:20:00 If you are plugging the headphones into the "line out" socket (where amplified speakers plug in) then you have a mis-match in power/impedance levels.

If you are plugging the headphones into the speakers (on a headphone output socket) it is a problem in the speaker amplifier.

Headphones do not contain an amplifier, and most computer "speaker out" sockets are really "line out" sockets not designed for headphones, the impedance is wrong and there is insufficient power available.

Some brand name PC's I have seen have had audio amps built in, but not many.

Perhaps describe exactly where you are plugging the headphones in?

354498 2005-05-13 01:46:00 Ok the E301 has a headphones out on the front of the computer case...that is where i am plugging the headphones into. Also have changed the settings in control panel --> Sounds and Audio Devices and changed the speaker arrangement to Headphones. This still doesnt make a difference.

Also have gone back into Harvey Norman where the computer was bought from and had a look at the E301 on display and the same thing happens... so that makes me think it is sorta a software/driver problem!?

haha gory one but hey!
cheers

354500 2005-05-14 13:12:00 what sort of sound hardware is in the PC ? . is it onboard or a card ?

if its onboard then you can expect to get some inteference through headphones . especially through a Pre-Built brand name PC .

Pre-Built brand name PC's are not very "beefy" when it comes to sound, they will often just install an el cheapo sound chip just to be able to run a set of non-powered speakers .

Cheers .

354501 2005-05-14 22:48:00 What is the basis for you assuming that the front socket(s) are actually headphone capable? Does the supplied information specify that they are?

The normal Line Out audio on a PC uses the same socket (3.5mm stereo) as headphones, but it is not designed for headphones as they do not have an in-built amplifier.

I have see older HP PC's that have internal amplifiers for headphones, but not recently.

354502 2005-05-15 06:08:00 I cannot give you a technical answer to this but my year old HP laptop - down at the end of the El Cheapo range gives me very good sound through ear plugs - I haven't tried earphones on it but anyway I prefer plugs. It is good enough for me to watch films with a great deal of enjoyment - in fact with my fairly bad hearing loss it is the best way for me - much better that my all singing expensive whacking great Sony TV with all mod cons. I suggest you check ear plugs then if no better return to the seller. Let them fix it.

If your highlighting its an issue when the volume is loud, rather at lower volume that may give you a hint as to a reasoning.

354504 2005-05-25 02:45:00 I too have a new comp. It too is a hewlett packard. Small speakers in the momnitor were going fine for the first three days, now the osund is so low in volume it's almost inaudible.
I have tried seperate speakers and earphones, makes no difference.
Check mute button, checked hardware devices, checked, volume settings.
I still only get very slight sound on full volume.
Can anyone help please

354505 2005-05-25 02:51:00 I thought the reason for spending craploads on a brand name computer was the warenty, not quality. Take them back. Rob99 (151)
