354390 2005-05-12 07:46:00 My friend is looking at building a computer for his graphic designing and photo editing works. He is looking a P4 3.2G machine with 1 GB RAM. Since he is doing lots of graphic works with this machine, a good video card (I think) is essential. Any special recommendations for this card?

What other specs to pay special attention at other than the video card, ram and a large capacity HDD?

Your recommendations and suggestions are appreciated.

Cheers

PCIE preferred but AGP can be considered. Which suits this nature of job better?

354393 2005-05-12 08:36:00 would depend on what motherboard you have, do you have a pcie or a agp motherboard?

maybe a 64bit machine is more suited to his needs?

354394 2005-05-12 08:49:00 What sort of graphics.

If he wants a decent graphics workstation go for AMD on pro graphics board with a Quadro FX card (PCIE or AGP 8x).

If he doesn't want to shell out that much dosh, go for an AMD CPU at least, they spank the Intels at the mo for this type of work. Put with the right motherboard and card and it'll fly.

354396 2005-05-12 09:06:00 Depends on the graphics, high end stuff, CAD, yes. But, in general for common or garden variety, photo's, no.

Lots of RAM and a good CPU (on the right board with the right drivers)would be the first things to look at, then video cards and fast discs (RAID?) and, software.

What M'board would you recommend? He is willing to spend <$2500 all in .

What configuration (M'board, CPU, Video card, RAM etc) would you recommend at this budget? A CRT monitor will be better than a LCD?

todays lcd screens are up there with crts for graphic work. Just make sure you calibrate properly. Has he thought about going the mac way?You can get an imac for that sought of money.

Then, what are the critical components in this case?
