354275 2005-05-12 03:18:00 Hi, 2 odd things. Not big deals but curious.
1. I have on this (borrowed) machine an entry in msconfig ( Win98se) Sexy_New Zealand which I can't rid of with AdAaware, Spybot, CCleaner or even manually going throgh the registry and the interesting thing is it''s pathname is this.......
c:\Program Files\dialers\Sexy_New Zealand (space or not no difference).
Whenever I go to lowercase c: I get uppercase C:, which is where it says it isn't.
Odd eh? Is this some kind of malware trick to somehow disable accessing C: because it says it's at c:?

2. On another machine (friend's) I uninstalled Norton I thought very well but at the startup during the POST screens it shows an entry for Nortons at C; drive.
Note "C" "semi-colon". Is this another funny thig? Never struck anything but colons before with drives.

Any ideas, suggestions, experience of this? Neither are really an issue the comps work fine but is really an interesting puzzle................m

354276 2005-05-12 04:13:00 The dialer could be a big issue.
Check out dialer on Google and get a removal tool

354278 2005-05-12 04:40:00 Thanks kjaada I did check it out but nothing but a similar site in nz selling adult gear, doubt it's that and speedy will check that thread. (busy shifting neighbour at the same time. Every time I get a perk I check in here again. :D ) mark c (247)
354279 2005-05-12 04:42:00 On a "borrowed" puter it could be genuine I guess. kjaada (253)
354280 2005-05-12 04:47:00 What I meant was, there are dialer removal tools if you feel you have to get rid of it.It all depends on the person you have the machine from. kjaada (253)
354281 2005-05-12 07:28:00 Thanks for all the replies. I should have said that this prog (SexyNZ) must have been on the comp when I got it but the first thing I did (when I got this comp)was put on anti-malware progs and CCleaner and did the maintenance and a whole lot of cleaning up what you might call the usual routine cleaning up after yer average end-user. Have had phone bills since then and nothing odd. Pretty sure SNZ is not functioning on this but the entry in msconfig is a puzzle.

I noticed the small "c" so I was intrigued by that so thought I'd biff it anyway but no way. I have looked up "removing disabled items in msconfig startup" on various sites and forums even here at Pressf1 but no dice.

The real puzzle is the two (to me) wierd descriptions of C: I know you can call your primary HD Z if you want and maybe uppercase/lowercase doesn't matter a hoot but the entry of Norton's followed by a semi-colon is still odd, and how did SNZ manage to get a pathname with a small c?

354282 2005-05-12 08:24:00 Any chance of a screenshot of what you are going on about?

ImageF1 (sal.neoburn.net)

Case doesn't matter with Windows (usually)

Norton's what?

Doesn't show the full pathname but it's...

c:\program files\dialers\sexy_New Zealand\sexy_New Zealand\noconnect

The "noconnect" sounds promising. Like I said I don't think it's active, just this odd entry in msconfig\startup.

OK so uppercase/lowercase doesn't matter but a bit strange the pathname with the lowercase doesn't lead to anything. The only lowercase entry in that file.

The Nortons I think was the full monty, AV, Internet Security, Ghost.

BUT THE real puzzle (with the Norton thing) is the use of the semi-colon. Thanks for your help so far.

354284 2005-05-12 09:36:00 I would remove mywebsearch as well . Its spyware/malware

You might have to remove Mywebsearch and that NZ thing in the registry

Do you know how to use the registry?

Run ccleaner i see u have it, go to tools/startup programs .

See if the entry for Mywebsearch and that NZ one are there .

If they are delete both then reboot . Or take a snapshot of what else is under tools/startup programs, in ccleaner .

Just in case there's something else starting when u boot Windows, which shouldnt be .
