354206 2005-05-11 12:34:00 Hi guys, got this laptop, and I wanna put DSL on it, however there is no CD drive in the thing?

How could I do it otherwise?

It has serial, parallel, (small) SCSI, modem (rj11?) ports, floppy drive, and PCMCIA bay.

I also have my PC which can interface to it with serial, and parallel.

Is there any way I can instal to it without buying anything?

Or can I install to it with lan? (usb/lan pcmcia card)

cheers

354207 2005-05-11 14:17:00 Hi Hamster,

I'm not to sure what you mean by DSL, but most linux distros can be installed via network. You will need to check your installation disk as it should contain existing floppy disk images for the different types of install.

You would obviously want to use the network boot disk. Once you have created it you will need to check to see if it permits Samba as well as the standard NFS and FTP types of network install. Otherwise you will need to set up a NFS share or FTP server.

354208 2005-05-12 02:11:00 I looked, and I can't find a boot image for DSL that supports NFS or ftp installs, although Debian (on which DSL is based) clearly supports network/ftp installs. I have no idea if the Debian ftp install disk can install DSL. So you maybe stuck with the disk floppy install (see the DSL site). It can be done, but you need around x 60 floppies!

If you are interested, Slackware, Debian, FreeBSD, NetBSD, SuSE and a whole lot of other distros support ftp installs.

P.S. Before you kill DOS, try and update the bios on that thing.
