355151 2005-05-14 12:01:00 Hi can anyone please help. I'm just putting together a small PC to do some light tasks and am having problems with standby and shutdown from the button.
The motherboard is a Jetaway 7BXAN with P3 500mhz, and I'm running XP Pro. All runs fine, except there is no option for standby on shutdown, and also the button does not shutdown the PC when windows is started. The PC starts fine from button, and will shutdown if the button is pressed during initial boot up, but once there are signs XP has started to load, the button will only work if held down for 4 seconds for a hard shutdown.
The funny thing is though, if the button is pressed once windows has started, the keyboard lights will briefly flash, then keyboard will no longer work (keyboard has been shutdown I assume).
There are timing options in the BIOS for hibernate, standby and doze, but changing these seems to make no difference, and I assume that as these options are there, the PC is capable of standby.
Also, as the button will shutdown the PC on booting, and shuts down the keyboard, I assume it has the capability to shutdown XP off the button too. But it just does not give me the option.
I have looked in advanced power settings in XP, and there is no option there for setting the button to standby or shutdown.

Can anyone please help?

355152 2005-05-14 12:05:00 You have to install the video card drivers to get the standby button to work.

I think its usually there, but its grayed/ghosted? Without any video drivers installed.

Once the correct video drivers are installed, you'll have the options/buttons.

355155 2005-05-14 12:28:00 No joy I'm afraid.
I've made sure I have the drivers installed and it's no luck, still doesn't give me the options. I gues my motherboard must not support it.

355156 2005-05-14 22:23:00 Thats possible . Not all mobos do support standby . . .

I think if the power supply isn't an ATX power supply, AT power supplies don't give u the option of the standby feature either .

Check in device manager and see if anything has a X or ? Have you got the motherboard cd??

Most mobos if you're doing a system from scratch / doing a clean install, need the inf file from the motherboard cd .

This needs to be installed FIRST, after Windows has been installled, then whatever other drivers it takes (video/sound/lan etc) .

355157 2005-05-15 07:32:00 It's a 20 pin ATX supply.
Don't have the mobo CD, I'll have to see if i can get one from somewhere.
I just thought it may support it as it has standby time settings in the bios, and the fact it shuts the keyboard down when the button is pressed.
Thanks for your help so far.

Are you aware that in some cases there can be, of noticed times, 3-30 second delay from when initially the button and holding it depressed to when the system may activate hibernate shut down?

typically it may be more like 3-7 seconds but it seems that it is not standardised like the key/s to enter the BIOS on all machines.

355159 2005-05-15 07:43:00 I press the button, and leave it forever and nothing happens. I think that's what you mean? bigmac (8114)

Have you checked the settings carefully?

there may be one setting for time and another for enabling/disabling

also consider what options are in Windows as to whether it is being supported/allowed or not, it may be possible in some cases that windows may override the Soft power switch [had a config like that awhile ago]
