| 355114 | 2005-05-14 10:36:00 | Have just reformated the old one,ME.Have loaded the Coexant Softk56 modem drivers. When trying to connect,it makes no dial noise and comes up straight away with "disconnected from paradise,Dial-up Networking was unable to complete the connection.Error 630.The modem is not responding properly. Please verify it's plugged in to pc and phone line." I've deleted it from Hardware Devices and had it search for and find the modem, which it says is working properly!!!And the drivers again. Checked on lots of screens and it seems to be set up on Port Com 1,whereas I'm sure before I reformated I took a note that it was on Port Com 3.Can't see where to change that!On the Modems Properties screen it shows the Modem on port 1,no modem on port 2,and that's it.I On the more info screen for port 1 it says "communicating with modem...Open Comma..port already open" "Port information... Port Com 1,Interrupt...4,Address...3F8,Highest speed....No response.Coexant Softk56 Data,Fax,Voice PCI Modem.....Identifier...PCI/RSS18004. Any one have any idea what to try next, please. |

| 355115 | 2005-05-14 11:43:00 | Hi Neil :) Whenever I have struck this problem I solve it by installing the COM3 port. You can do this in Control Panel's Add Hardware. I haven't done it in Win ME but the procedure should still be the same. Follow the Add Hardware wizard but tell it you have already installed the hardware and from the list find the Communications Port 3. Windows should install it for you and after a reboot it may then install the modem properly. If not, uninstall it yourself and reinstall. This is all from memory so you may have to follow your nose a bit. Good luck. :) |

| 355116 | 2005-05-14 11:45:00 | Could be the wrong drivers? Conexant modems are ultra generic and the drivers are very finicky. Might be easier just to grab a new one for $35. |

| 355117 | 2005-05-14 13:17:00 | Thanks FoxyMX,but can't select another Port Com in ME that I can see!I'll try removing the card again tomorrow.I took it out to try to find a name etc on it,but not much help. The drivers I've got are (I think) the ones that PC Co put in last time.So I'll give that a go.Then I might do what ninja has suggested.Apart from this problem,it's been quite easy, this reformatting.Hang on,just found and selected Com 3.Now to disconnect this one and try it. No,it's still going straight to "disconnecting from" after selecting the connect button. Thanks ninja,I was wondering if that might be the easiest way to go.Might do that yet! |

| 355120 | 2005-05-15 06:51:00 | Mythix, the only thing showing a yellow question mark in Device Manager is the PCI Communication Device.Where that came from I don't know! Tweak'e,why do I have to install motherbd drivers? Can't find any other cd's with them on!Please get back to me on that.Everything else seems to load ok. Otherwise I'll go grab another card tomorrow. |

Wrong drivers can be a common cause why it may say the modem is not responding, more rarely it may be a damaged modem, but more commonly from wrong drivers. Make sure you get the drivers for the device. If its a PCI card try looking for an FCC Code or identification of who makes the modem and try www.driverguide.co.nz (http://www.driverguide.co.nz) A generic driver may work although in rare cases it may be you will need a specific non generic driver. |

| 355122 | 2005-05-15 06:56:00 | you need to install the motherboard drivers otherwise some cards (such as your modem) will not install properly which is the problem you have ( yellow question mark in Device Manager is the PCI Communication Device ie modem) everest is a handy program which will tell you what chipset etc your pc is useing. |

Haven't noticed this yet with Modems, worth checking though. Found this issue with USB. You are good to point that out, I would assume though from my experience with most people helping with some systems from time to time a more pressing issue is the wrong drivers or even lack of drivers. Thank you for pointing it out though, maybe as it goes on more can be added as appropriate. |
