I was checking out this link www.techie.net.nz which I thought looks promising.
I logged on and added the new dns like it suggested and everything seems to work fine, I can only access the links on that page (and the corresponding files on the ftp site).

I want to download a linux distro as I have never tried one. I'm very confident in my ability to navigate windows so I would like suggestions for a windows like distro for a linux newbie :) I was thinking yoper?

Also before I take the plunge I want to be sure that this doesn't constitute some of my monthly allowance. I'm on the 256 k 1Gig plan and don't want to blow it all downloading a 650 MB distro.

Cheers

Yoper is a good distro, however I would recommend Knoppix Live CD . It's a great distro and you can try it without touching your hard drive and it's contents .

cheers

354888 2005-05-14 07:47:00 went to the library and and got a book out on point and click linux
came with simplyMEPIS which can be booted up as a live cd or installed to the hard drive.
Anyone tried MEPIS? How does it compare to other distros?

Will try it this evening

Yup, using it at the mo. Have tried Yoper as well, great distro but still a little raw around the edges.

Mepis as a desktop OS is far and away superior to Knoppix IMO. It's not entirely point and click, you can still do all the usual Nix things and there is no way you could confuse it with Windows, but it's very user friendly all the same once you get your head around the differences.

If the version of Mepis that came with the mag is 3.3 you'll be fine (latest version is 3.3.1). It's dead easy to install from the live CD, there's an icon on the desktop which takes you to the OS centre, it's all pretty obvious from there. One thing to do before installing is to carve off a new partition, minimum 5GB (can install on way less but that gives a bit of room to grow), 10GB is better, I've allowed 23GB. When installing use QtParted to further break the partition into root / (1.5GB min), home (your files/documents, as big as you think you need) and linux swap (2x ram but if you have a gig don't make 2GB, 512MB or 1GB will be heaps) partitions. It'll give you the choice of installing a 2.4 or 2.6 kernel, choose the latter unless your on old hardware, to save space just install the one kernal (I have both installed for no other reason than I could). What sort of video card are you running? nVidia should be fine right off, there are drivers for Ati but you might need to play with it a bit to get it running at optimim.

Have fun.

ah . . . . . . . be carefull . a couple of Xtra's jetstream plans do count the national traffic towards the monthly quoata . . . like it does on mine . but then again im on the 2MB 10GIG Plan .

Just go along to your local tech shop and ask them to download it for you, if they are half decent they should just charge you for the Blank Disc, or at most $10, thats what they do around the manawatu area .

354892 2005-05-14 12:24:00 If you login using username@jetstreamgames.co.nz then the download won't go against your quota.

You'll find the downloads at ftp://ftp2.jetstreamgames.co.nz/dist/

354893 2005-05-14 13:01:00 The version of MEPIS that came with the book was 2.6.x I think. Book several years old by the looks of it.

CD loaded fine albeit very slow (I known CD transfer speeds are much slower than from the HD).

I have a sis xabre 400 graphics card (don't laugh-it was more than adequate until I tried to play doom 3 ROE, there it really let me down :( ).

I do like the fact that once it was booted, I could navigate in a similar way to windows and right away I had access to dvd/cd burning tools, could connect to the net straight away (no drivers or configuring needed), browser, word processing etc already installed.

It will certainly be worth a look.
Can I partion one of my drives non distructively?

That link posted was the one I was looking at-thanks for confirming what I thought was the case :)
