354903 2005-05-14 01:11:00 Hello, I purchased an eMachines t3958 not long ago, which came installed with Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition. I recently reformatted, and installed Windows XP Pro as I needed several features it offered which home edition did not.
After reformatting, my sound no longer works. I've tried installing the drivers for my motherboard, as I have on-board audio, from the intel website. My motherboard is Intel Celeron D845GVSR, and ive tried the most recent drivers (Realtek AC97), but when installing the driver the computer hangs up on the file "RtlCPAPI.dll" and then it restarts the computer automatically. It does not finish installing the drivers, and in device manager it says the device has a problem. The device does have a yellow exclamation point next to it in device manager, seemingly having a conflict.
I ran msinfo32, and it showed a sharing/conflict between the audio and SMBus controller, as they both use IRQ 3. I tried disabling the SMBus controller, but still couldn't install the drivers successfully. Next, I went into the BIOS and disabled all features except for the audio, and still could not install the drivers.
Also, I do not have a restore cd which contains the driver, though I feel this problem is more related to the conflict issue than the driver files.
I am unable to change the IRQ setting for the audio and the SMBus controller, so is there anything I could do to resolve this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Either post here please, or email me at hazeyfaze@hotmail.com

354904 2005-05-14 01:16:00 You cant disable the SM bus controller.

I think its needed for the onboard USB ports and other things.

Install the ide inf file from the Intel site or the mobo cd, to fix the SM bus prob.

354905 2005-05-14 01:52:00 There was no problem with the SMBus Controller, however I installed the INF Chipset Files, and the same problem still exists. Any advice relating to the Sound problem? hazeyfaze (8107)
354906 2005-05-14 02:05:00 Delete the soundcard entry if theres anything there

Does the SM bus still show a prob / show an X? Delete it then reboot.

As stated on the intel site

developer.intel.com

The inf file should be installed before anything else.

Are the files here the same as what u installed?

354907 2005-05-14 02:33:00 The SmBus controller never had an X next to it, nor any problems. But it conflicts with the Audio device on the same IRQ, and yep those are the files I installed. I think I need to switch the IRQ one of them uses, but I have no idea how to go about doing that. hazeyfaze (8107)
354908 2005-05-14 02:44:00 I dont think its a conflict.

On mine, 5 devices share IRQ's twice (IRQ 5,16,22,23,18)

3 share the same memory address and 3 share the same I/O port. And everything works fine.

You sure the audio/sound hasnt been disabled in the BIOS?

354909 2005-05-14 02:56:00 Just went and verified, everything is still enabled in BIOS. Here is new information:

I tried deleting the SMBus controller and the Audio controller, restarted to install them and after beginning installation of Realtek Audio Drivers I got the following blue screen of death:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is your first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the Stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

354910 2005-05-14 03:11:00 It was suggested elsewhere to update my BIOS, however when I attempt to update my BIOS it says that I am attempting to update to a BIOS that is not for my system. However, I have physically verified that my Motherboard is an Intel Celeron D845GVSR/D845EPI but when I try to use the BIOS update from here support.intel.com is doesn't work. hazeyfaze (8107)
354911 2005-05-14 03:13:00 I've posted this in a XP newsgroup . I'll see if anyone answers . BUT it sounds like that portcls . sys file has something to do with the soundcard drivers .

It (the driver for it maybe corrupt) .

Is SP1 or SP2 installed at the mo??

354912 2005-05-14 03:24:00 SP2, in fact I think that's when the sound went out on my system was during the windows update after initial install. hazeyfaze (8107)
