354875 2005-05-14 00:56:00 Okay... I just got moved and unpacked my Windows 2000 computer. For the time being, I have dial - up. I'm In a new house, and everything is new. My computer has a Conexant HCF V90 56K Data Fax PCI Modem. When I connected to the internet I got 24.6K! The most I've ever gotten with this connection is 28.8k. How can I get my connection speed to 56K? :help: Ultimate (8106)
354876 2005-05-14 01:03:00 check your phone lines. check the lead to the jack isn't damaged.

it simply could be the aera you have moved into. ask your neighbours how good their net conection is.

354877 2005-05-14 01:05:00 It's probably the phone lines that are the problem.

Try unplugging every other phone device in the house. If you're using an extension lead gt rid of it.

At any rate, the "connection" speed has no actual real bearing on the speed at which you transfer data.

354878 2005-05-14 03:38:00 Okay. I tried multiple times unplugging different phone devices. I called my ISP and they gave me different numbers to use, but none of them worked. What should I do? Is there any way I can "tweak" my modem to get a better connection speed? Ultimate (8106)
354879 2005-05-14 04:18:00 you can string your modem to slow it down to the level of the phone lines. this at least will make it more stable. your ISP proberly suggested that allready. otherwise ring telecom ;) tweak'e (69)
354880 2005-05-14 04:24:00 I'd be inclined to check that it isn't already set to connect at a maximum rate of 28.8 kbps. ;) Graham L (2)
354881 2005-05-14 05:41:00 Your phone line may be "pair gained", where they can digitally split one line to feed two customers . This is done when there are insufficient cables in the area to service the number of connections .

This will limit the maximum connect speed to 28 . 8 kbps .

Ask Telecom if this is the case .

354882 2005-05-14 15:17:00 Well, I'm not sure if it's the phone lines because before, I lived in another area and I got the same connection speed... As for stringing my modem? How do I do that? Ultimate (8106)

OK, its probably unlikely to affect you in two locations, but that was not clear in your first post, you only referred to "this connection".

PCI modems can be troublesome, but you should first try the latest drivers for your exact modem and operating system.

354884 2005-05-14 23:34:00 It may already have a string in the modem to slow your connect speed.
Go to control panels/ phone and modem
Click on Modem at the top and then Properties at the bottom
Click on Advanced tab at the top and check if anything is in the Extra Initialization Commands box
If so delete anything there and try that.
