354853 2005-05-14 00:40:00 "Microsoft has beaten its game console rivals to the starting line with the introduction of its new Xbox."

Read about it Here (news.com.com)

and Wired Magazine article (www.wired.com)

As I am not a gamer, I wonder if Billy has reason to smile with his new XBox?

354854 2005-05-14 01:29:00 And like I posted yesterday:

Xbox360 (www.xbox360.com) - the Xbox 360 site (That's what the new one is called).

It looks nice anyway, but not being a console type of guy I wouldn't know about the specs ;) I've never owned a console - would this be the one to buy? Or should I wait for the PS3 and compare them first? Apparently the PS3 is being launched this weekend, although won't be on sale until next year (in the US and Japan, so probably later than that here in NZ).

354855 2005-05-14 01:50:00 Any idea on price, Can't see it attracting the ps2 customers. plod (107)
354856 2005-05-14 01:53:00 Any idea on price, Can't see it attracting the ps2 customers. As its not due for US/Japan release until December-ish, I'd say no decision would have been made yet on NZ price (possibly not even a US price yet?)

354857 2005-05-14 02:16:00 I'd still like to know what's the appeal of console games, versus PC games. Greg (193)
354858 2005-05-14 02:31:00 console youy can plug in anyware, don't have to keep upgrading, consoles are much cheaper then a gaming pc(will have to wait for the pricing on the new xbox) to see if that remains. More game variety i think on a console. plod (107)

354861 2005-05-14 05:37:00 Ahhhhhhh..... I see.......

It's not meant to be a console per se. It is meant to be a home entertainment appliance, communications device and PC rolled into one. Better spec'd than the MacMini (Xbox has 3 x 3.2GHz cpus?) - I am sure Microsoft will very quickly roll out an OS/apps/peripherals that will magically turn the thing into your next PC. Guess they learnt something from Apple after all.

But, doesn't this mean that MS is competing against it's own customers - the hardware makers? We'll see how that one pans out.

Maybe we have been underestimating MS for too long now. Maybe Longhorn was redesigned for the XBox...

354862 2005-05-14 05:56:00 Sounds like a good unit.

But they are not saying if it is backward compatible. At least the PS2 will play PS1 games.

So those of us who have Xbox games might have to hang on to our Xboxs.
