355028 2005-05-18 20:18:00 OK, thanks for all that... one more thing ... I think the Up2date is freezing and not accessing any updates. The Redhat Up2date app gets to the point where a dialog says:
Testing Package set/Solving RPM Inter-dependencies

and then it goes no further.

Any ways around this?
Nevermind, found the yum update and am doing that. Unfortunately I have 200+ updates to download on dialup :(
Left it on overnight and its done 50 (100+ MB) :horrified

Left it on overnight and its done 50 (100+ MB) :horrifiedYeah, that is what I meant by not downloading all the updates :D. FC3 has been out for a while now so there is a truckload of updates availabe - the majority of these are package updates for general applications, with only a few security related ones. You don't need to update your general applications eg Gimp, OpenOffice, default Gnome/KDE packages etc if you don't want to. This is why Synaptic is really good as you can see via a GUI what packages are available for updating and be more selective with the ones you want (although you can do this in yum too to a lesser degree). I installed FC3 soon after it was released so I have kept my system up to date in gradual steps as updates are released.

This is what Synaptic looks like:

Packages listed with upgrades available (sal.neoburn.net)

New additions to the repositories (sal.neoburn.net) (since last time synaptic was run).

Packages available for installation which are not currently installed (sal.neoburn.net)

355030 2005-05-19 07:37:00 OK, currently up over 250MB mark :(
Been going for 24 hours and I still don´t think I am half way :horrified

Anyway; once these downloads have finished, I intend to delete lots of stuff (mozilla browser, and some other apps). Can I uninstall Up2date without any issues. No good to me if it doesn´t work.
Also intend to get rid of gok, vid conferencing, the old Firefox, (I have already updated to another folder) and a few other services (mainly revolving around debugging and networking (stuff that I thought I would need but have since realised I don´t).
Any foreseeable issues with any of these?

I now realise I should have done this BEFORE I typed in yum update.
Oh well, we live and we learn I spose

No good to me if it doesn´t work. You don't need to uninstall up2date, if you are using Gnome and have that blinking icon on the task bar indicating updates available, then just right-click it and select remove. I would hesitate uninstalling it compleletly. Just ignore that app.

Any foreseeable issues with any of these?Have a look through Add/Remove packages and see what you can uninstall via that. You can also remove packages via Yum. If you enter in man yum in a terminal window you will see the manual for Yum. Use the arrow to scroll and type q to quit. How did you update Firefox? If you have manually installed this package into a local folder, then the RPM package manager won't know about it and will not be able to update/remove it and you will have to perform this task yourself each time. There is a update to Firefox available (just grabbed it via Synaptic) which will automatically update the browser version installed during the initial installation process.
