355018 2005-05-16 11:06:00 Anyone else using any distro of Linux with dialup - What distro do you use, and is your browsing speed slower than Windows?

I have been using Linux on dial up since about 1998 with next to no problems. Speed is at least as good as MS Windows. The only problem I ever have had with my external serial port modem (V1456VQE) is on my current distribution (Fedora Core 3) - had to slow the serial port down from the normal 115kbps to 56kbps to get uploading to work at normal speed.

355019 2005-05-16 22:16:00 Thanks for your input :D

AS far as my Win file system, I am using NTFS with Win XP Pro (sorry shoulda mentioned it earlier)
Windows is on one drive, Linux shares a drive with ghosts of the first drives partitions.

I got rid of Ubuntu, have opted for FC3 (I liked it before, just got annoyed at lack of internal modem support) but now with external modem, all is sweet. I prefer the ´feel´ of FC3. Am using the gnome desktop (with Firefox). What is the KDE desktop like (with Konqueror - which I have read is the quickest browser out (in Win and Linux))?
I have set up FC3 with a 10GB partition and 8ish GB /swap (is this the same as a Windows page or swap file (i.e. virtual memory). Is this size ok? Am asking while its early days and I havent put too much into the linux partition (i.e if I need to do so I will jst change the partition sizes and reinstall) or does partition magic work in linux too ?
Currently Linux is a hobby (hence only allocating 20GB total to Linux), later it should become my primary O/S

Did you disable IPv6? How did you change the serial port speed.

Thanks for the help thus far all, and hopefully you will continue helping this Linux no0b :D

(incidentally this was posted using FC3)

Windows is on one drive, Linux shares a drive with ghosts of the first drives partitions. While you can add NTFS support easily enough, it is safer to stick with FAT32 for reading and writing.

I prefer the ´feel´ of FC3. Am using the gnome desktop (with Firefox). What is the KDE desktop like (with Konqueror - which I have read is the quickest browser out (in Win and Linux))?Why not try them both? I myself much prefer KDE but I always install Gnome as well as a second option. You can easily add KDE to your set up by going ALT-F2 and entering in system-config-packages and selecting the KDE desktop package. You will then find at the login window you can select which session you would like to use (KDE or Gnome).

I have set up FC3 with a 10GB partition and 8ish GB /swap (is this the same as a Windows page or swap file (i.e. virtual memory). Is this size ok? Am asking while its early days and I havent put too much into the linux partition (i.e if I need to do so I will jst change the partition sizes and reinstall) or does partition magic work in linux too ?Linux uses memory in a much more efficient way than what Windows does. Normally swap can be 2x installed RAM amount, so if you have 256 MB RAM make your swap 512 MB. If you have 512 MB of RAM, then I would just leave swap at 512 MB. Seeing as you don't really mind reinstalling, I would redo the partitions so that root (/) gets 12 GB's, Swap 512 MB and then make the rest (~7 GB's) a FAT32 partition that can be shared between Windows and Linux. Put any stuff you wish to access from either OS in this partition.

While new versions of Partition Magic can create Linux filesystems (ext2/3), it is best that you leave the distro to format them. If you like, redo the partitions so that the 7 Gig FAT32 partition is created and formatted via Partition Magic, but leave the rest as unallocated (unformatted) and let FC3 install in the unallocated free space. It will automatically use the rest of that space (~12 Gig's) and make its own / and swap partitions from that and format it as ext3.

Another option is to use a Live-CD that has QTParted (a clone of Partition Magic) on it (eg a new release of Knoppix). This can non-destructively (*normally*) resize your existing Linux partitions so that you can reduce swap and create a spare FAT32 partition from the freed up space.

Linux is a learning curve, but it sounds like you are doing really well so far - keep it up :)

I did disable IPv6 but it made no difference to my problem. I changed the port speed from within kppp from memory (can't see those settings while I am on line but looked at the network hardware settings and they still are at 115200bps).

355022 2005-05-17 11:58:00 OK, as per Jens advice I repartitioned the slave drive.
Took Ghost NTFS partition back to 15GB, put in a FAT32 partition of 8GB in size, did a 1GB swap, and just over 14GB for FC3.

I am not sure what I did this time (I think it was that I left the baud rate alone at 115200) but now when I go online I get similar to Windows up/down load rates (infact I think just a bit quicker). (I havent disabled IPv6 either :D)
Got printer configured sweet (Epson C43UX) and am in the process of upgrading various things (firefox, flash player, and soon to do FC3 updates using the Update tool (can´t remember what its called but I had a breif encounter with it yesterday).
Do the updates automatically install?
Other things I should ask, what anti viruses work with linux (any?), I have SElinux installed, do I need a firewall, and what works with Linux? Recommendations?
Are these major issues in Linux (spot the no0b:p)?
Jen said to me once that Linux [is/can be] like Windows but its not Windows... does that mean there are no cookies :p
Where do I empty these from
Oh the questions :D

355023 2005-05-18 06:55:00 A couple of further questions:

Is there a way to add remove individual apps (i.e. I know FC3 comes with the Mozilla Browser, I would like to delete it, without taking out the entire group its in (as Add/Remove applicatios I assume does)

Can I share my connection to the internet like I do with Windows? Any guides online as to how. I have another comp that shares my modem. I am also looking for any guides on how to set up a p2p network in Linux (Windows to Linux)

Finally:
When you shut Windows down, it shuts off the machine. When I shut Linux down, it gives these lines then hangs (doesnt shut machine down):

Halting system...
md: stopping all devices
md: md0 switched to read only mode
Shutdown: hdb <<this is drive with Linux on it
Shutdown: hda
Power down
acpi_power_off called
_ <<this is a blinking cursor

Is this normal not to shut down? If not how do I fix it?

Do the updates automatically install? You would of used up2date which functions in a manner similiar to Windows Update. The up2date site only provides updates to more general system/application files. It won't give you a list of additional program you can install. It will download and install the updates automatically. Seeing as FC3 has been released for a while now, there will be heaps to update. I wouldn't really worry about doing them all, and just look for any security patches.

There is a much better way of managing your system with updates, new applications, and removing applications and that is by using Synaptic. This is like a huge shopping mall for applications. It will install them for you as well. There is a great installation guide here (fedoranews.org) that you can follow. Get Yum sorted first then install the packages for Synaptic. There is also another setup guide here (www.mjmwired.net) that you might want to browse.

Other things I should ask, what anti viruses work with linux (any?), I have SElinux installed, do I need a firewall, and what works with Linux? Recommendations? You don't need any Antivirus software unless you are planning to move attachments from emails over to your Windows partition that could be at risk. Window viruses are harmless to Linux. Linux has an inbuilt firewall called iptables :D. If you go ALT-F2 and enter in sytem-config-securitylevel you can check you have enabled this firewall.

Are these major issues in Linux (spot the no0b:p)?

Where do I empty these fromYou don't need to worry about trojans, viruses, broswer hijacking, malware, adware, ActiveX doing nasty stuff etc, but you still will need to make sure Firefox (and other browsers) are kept up to date with security patch releases. You can kill your cookies in Firefox by going Edit > Preferences > Privacy.

Oh and small tip, and don't try and find the Disk Defragger either, there isn't one required Linux filesystems ;) (I spend some time looking for this app when I first started to use Linux ...)

Is there a way to add remove individual apps (i.e. I know FC3 comes with the Mozilla Browser, I would like to delete it, without taking out the entire group its in (as Add/Remove applicatios I assume does)The easiest way of doing this is via Synaptic once you have it installed.

Is this normal not to shut down? If not how do I fix it?FC should just shutdown fully without halting at this point. To turn your machine off at this point, just hold in your power button on the PC for about 5-8 secs. This might be a BIOS setting you need to change for ACPI? Someone else might be able to clarify this one for you.

I am also looking for any guides on how to set up a p2p network in Linux (Windows to Linux)Yes... A linux machine is a great gateway and firewall between your network and the outside world. Its probably better to get all the little problems out of the way before you set this up though.

Finally:
When you shut Windows down, it shuts off the machine. When I shut Linux down, it ..... (doesnt shut machine down): Try typing "poweroff" This does the same as "halt" except shuts the machine completely down.

Add/remove Programs gives you complete control over the addition or removal of individual programs.

You need to add a few lines to your firewall script or to /etc/rc.local. They are:

modprob iptable_nat
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o ppp0 -j MASQUERADE
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

Another approach is the install the GUI firewall obtained from: http://firestarter.sourceforge.net/
Internet sharing is as simple as a tick box from here.

355027 2005-05-18 11:16:00 OK, thanks for all that... one more thing ... I think the Up2date is freezing and not accessing any updates. The Redhat Up2date app gets to the point where a dialog says:
Testing Package set/Solving RPM Inter-dependencies

and then it goes no further.

Any ways around this?
