354958 2005-05-15 07:13:00 I'm getting a new computer. My dad will be bringing me a small desktop from hong kong with 512mb ram.Not sure what GHZ speed but should be a pretty fast 1.

Anyidea. My current computer speed is 200mhz with 64 edo ram running windows 98se.

Whenever I leave my computer on the computer for say 30 minutes and come back and use it.I find my computer would be extremely slow and it seems as though windows has used up all my computer's resource like ram etc.

This also had happened with windows 95 but windows 98se was a bit better.

Does windows XP have this problem?

Would u say 512mb ram be enough to run games like Doom 3 warcraft etc?

I think my dad would probably be getting a 2.6ghz processor .something like that.It will be more than 1ghz of course.

My father said that the normal desktops motherboard uses a different size mother board than a small desktop and other things such as graphics card etc are different and if you buy a normal graphics card for a pc it would not fit on a small desktop. Is this correct?

$200 for 1gb DDR SDRAm from hong kong

Is NZ cheaper? Is the ram from small desktops the same type as the standard large desktops?

My pc will be assembled by a shop overseas.

Option 1
1. Have you looked at what is taking up resources? You can get 3rd party software to report task/dll or so forth and memory used
2. Look at it and see if you can notice any irregularities

Option 2
If no programs have been enlarged in memory or programs added intentionally e.g. if you did not request data gain for an application or multiple applications then you may want to consider a 'Memory Leak'

a Memory Leak can be, for example, where programs don't 'keep track' of what they are using so well and may take memory incorrectly or open it then not close it properly. To cut it short they may use memory in such a fashion it may use up resources evermoreso as the memory leak continues.

Depending on the speed of the 'memory leak' it may be a few seconds to manifest for example to hours.

Memory leaks can be caused by Applications or the operating system. It has been said W98SE may be more predisposed to them although it may be applications that, what may be typically, the greater offender.

In cases where memory leaks continue the resources may become increasingly utilised, hard disk may be used for memory, and because of this usage of hard disk to memory, the system may become noticably slower and may continue to do so until its resolved e.g. the application closing solves it [not always], reset.

354959 2005-05-15 12:44:00 I think its more likely i don't have enough ram. When I boot up my computer and use a program to free as many ram as possible.I can free up to 28mb of ram and then as I run application it quickly drops to 0...
No matter which program I run over a period of 30 mins later the computer becomes sluggish.Closing the program doesn't always help.
Gnoozle took 4 minutes to load.My computer can barely run the program.

Do you think the graphics card would be enough to run games?Im a PC fan!!Haven't played any games since after 1998 cos my computer was just too slow.

Should I use my sound blaster awe64 card or should I use the onboard sound card which will be on the motherboard? My dad says that onboard sound are quite good compared to a few years ago

354960 2005-05-15 12:49:00 How old are you? If your like a 'youth' or finances are bad I would be willing to donate a 32MB SDRAM i have left over from computer repairs. Don't provide any details though first, check with your dad.

Bar a few parents which are 'out of the norm' parents can usually provide education for us and will care for us sometimes more than other... i mean there may be something in blood is thicker than water... maybe sometimes parents go through issues and sometimes those issues may be smaller or larger, but it can become equatable that parents are there to help us, even if sometimes we hate it [Although talking about it and finding solutions may make it better]

354961 2005-05-15 12:52:00 I used to hate or dislike my parents growing up.

I realised though it wasn't that, looking back, it was that I wanted to be happy with myself, to have the things in life i wanted, and i would blame others for this rather than try and find ways to find it better, as if the means of facilitation were less so i become displeased with what i could do, as i grew up more i realised it was less about my parents and more about what was possible to do and what i wanted from life.

354962 2005-05-15 12:58:00 Okay looking up at the past posts.......

Regarding game specs, its best to go to google or somewhere, find the MFT [Manufacturer] and get the specs.

You may notice 'minimum requirements' and 'recommended requirements', recommended may indicate a more optimale experience e.g. better graphics.

Some games mags may actually state higher 'recommendations' as they may be pro game and want more performance or enjoyment from their games. At a cost i would suppose.

I would allow that regardless of what spec you get, if you want to run the latest games your machine may last 9-12 months.

Sometimes, i advise people this, that it can be better off doing medium quality spec computer repeatedly than a high end spec less often because of the way the costs come down.

354963 2005-05-15 13:02:00 Note overseas computers warranties may or may not apply in New Zealand. New Zealand protection laws may be ruled mute. The cost of shipping may be higher if errors were to arise and delays enhanced.

I won't tell you what you to do, or what you dad should do, but i will put forward ideas to consider.

It could be quite unpleasant if there is an error and it has to be shipped back without New Zealand laws to help protect you, but that is not to say it will be, more so that it could be.

354964 2005-05-15 13:43:00 My dad is bring it over.I think my dad will play around it for a week.

I think I will upgrade it after I get earn more at trademe.

I was wondering has anyone experienced this before.

You take your computer for upgrading but they steal some of your computer parts without telling you?Thats what im scared of!!

354966 2005-05-15 13:46:00 I like my parents.Talk to my dad all the time.But mum is a bit rough.lol.!!! Ninjabear (2948)
354967 2005-05-15 13:47:00 Fair enough, suppose 20 and you can make decisions for yourself more so although even at say 50 we may not be able to make the best choice possible within normal limits CreightonBrown (5692)
