355165 2005-05-14 13:30:00 My 4gb hardrive failed and I want to install an 80gb drive in my IBM 2199 (K6 450mhz). How do I get the bios to recognise the new drive? Do I need to upgrade the bios (Award Modular v6.00PG). Is that easy? Will I be able to run a DVD burner on this PC? bpt2 (6653)
355166 2005-05-14 23:03:00 Install the harddrive into your computer, and make sure your BIOS is set to Auto(detect).
Hopefully your BIOS supports INT13 extensions (which allows the computer to recognise HD capacity above 8GB).
If not, go to the motherboard home site and see if a new BIOS will support INT13 (if coded after 1998 it should).
Upgrading the BIOS can either make for a better computing experience; or kill your mobo if something goes wrong in the installation of your BIOS upgrade.
Go here (www.pcstats.com) to read about flashing a BIOS. Read it all, don't miss steps.
As far as the DVD, providing your power supply can handle it, and your computer supports running a DVD player on your IDE secondary (if you have a secondary IDE connector with a CD ROM/Writer connected, it will support it), I don't see why not.

355167 2005-05-15 04:58:00 Its quite likely that it won't be able to use the full 80Gb. Follow Mythixs advise and see how it goes. Should get 8Gb out of it at worst. Oh and sometimes while the BIOS will report it as being a lot smaller Windows may find it as a bigger drive - I've come across that before with old motherboards. pctek (84)
355168 2005-05-16 02:24:00 I gather from the IBM site that a bios upgrade, BTPEN10A, will allow me to use a harddrive up to 127gb. But I just cannot locate the bios itself. The motherboard is a Universal Scientific with a SiS 530 chipset. bpt2 (6653)
355169 2005-05-16 03:23:00 The links Google gives from "btpen10a download" might be useful. You'll geta few more from "btpen10a site:ibm.com". Graham L (2)
355170 2005-05-21 14:07:00 Thanks for your efforts. I solved my problem by getting a drive overlay file which allowed the hard drive to be recognised. bpt2 (6653)
