355701 2005-05-16 09:20:00 I am trying to help a friend who is getting no data transmission after logging on . Cmptr running Windows XP & a 56k dial up modem . ISP is Clearnet .

Makes connexion to Clearnet ok (shows data packets sent/received) but cannot get any response when trying to send/receive mail (Outlook Express, V . 6) or when trying to log on to any web site (using either IE6 or M . Firefox) .

Clearnet Help has gone as far as its prepared to go with suggested DNS and email settings . Their advice now is that a Firewall and or Anti Virus setting must be blocking data transmission .
I have uninstalled an out of date NAV 2004, have installed AVG Free, scanned and found 37 (mainly Trojan) viruses, all “unhealable” & so left in AVG Virus Vault . Windows XP firewall setting is “ON” but doesn’t make any difference when I set it to “Off” . No other Firewalls installed . Have also tried a System Restore to a date preceding uninstall/instal of AV software; no change .

Have exhausted my efforts . Any help getting data moving again wd be greatly appreciated .

Also, processing is very slow even after a de-frag, disc check, & deletion of temp files . I suspect this is mainly due to nearly full HDD (14 Gb total, 2 . 5Gb unused) . Its an HP Pavilion, RAM = 192Mb; CPU = Intel Celeron 2 - 600 MHz; Motherboard = Azus Hawk .

Is an older system like this is worth spending $ on – e . g . bigger HD, more Ram?

355702 2005-05-16 09:39:00 Was NAV 2004 part of Internet Security 2004??

Or was NAV installed by itself? Internet Security used to stop one of its services, and this also stopped u from browsing the net, but u could connect to the net .

I would also try Hijackthis . merijn . org/files/hijackthis . zip" target="_blank">www . merijn . org

From here . spywareinfo . com/~merijn/" target="_blank">www . spywareinfo . com

Create a folder called HJT, unzip this file into it, run it then do a scan and post the log here . One of those trojans may have changed something .

Go here http://www . ccleaner . com and run it, it might give u a bit more space .

Also try defragging in safe mode . If u dont defrag in safe mode .

355704 2005-05-16 11:44:00 I am trying to help a friend who is getting no data transmission after logging on. Cmptr running Windows XP {edit................}

Its an HP Pavilion, RAM = 192Mb; CPU = Intel Celeron 2 - 600 MHz; Motherboard = Azus Hawk.

Reccomended RAM for xp is 256 meg. That may explain why every thing is slow.
Also check the hosts file hasnt been hijacked (C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc)

To answer your question is it worth upgrading in my opinion.......... no. In this case buy new or build would be a far wiser investment. But it is still a usable machine, win98 or some linux distro's would run fine on those spec's.

moving data would be easy if the pc had network card, just use a cross over cable between old and new, usb pen drive another way or buy an second disk and slave it to the first copy the data across.

355705 2005-05-16 20:51:00 and dont go connectin to the web wiht the firewall OFF or else you will most likely catch some more viruses in a few seconds/minutes............also you will most likely need to get this and run it WinsockXPFix.exe drcspy (146)
355706 2005-05-16 21:13:00 Empty the temp folder. Download Spybot, AdAware and Hijackthis and run all 3. Its probably full of spyware too. pctek (84)
355707 2005-05-16 21:37:00 If all else fails try another modem
Sometimes a knackered modem will actually connect but won't go anywhere

355708 2005-05-17 02:00:00 Have another look at the Dial-up Connection . If the "Proxy Server" option is enabled when it shouldn't be you can get exactly that problem .

I don't think it will be a faulty modem .
