| 355311 | 2005-05-15 06:26:00 | Having frequent Jetstream disconnections recently and rang Xtra's helpdesk just now and this guy insisted that the problem is because I am using the Xtra's static DNS server address (Primary: 202.27.158.40 ; Secondary: 202.27.156.72). He told me that I should obtain the DNS server settings automatically. Does this make sense? And, my old Nokia Ni500 does not support this capability of obtaining IP address automatically. |

BTW you could use a DNS cache program which is quite handy. |

| 355313 | 2005-05-15 07:18:00 | Check Measure <> ADSL Device <> Cabling on premises <> cabling off premesis <> Remote site Assumably starting from one end may be more cost effective than getting things checked off premesis. Have you checked the connections are secure. Do you know someones router you could borrow to test whether its a cable/remote issue or local? How often does it have this issue? it may actually occur in quite small percentages for the service or cabling. Some may say that 98-99% uptime is good, ideally 100% but well we don't always live in a perfect world. |

| 355314 | 2005-05-15 07:21:00 | We had that type of issue last month (worse during the school hols) but we have not had this happen for a few weeks. | stu161204 (123) | ||

Have you checked the connections are secure . Do you know someones router you could borrow to test whether its a cable/remote issue or local? How often does it have this issue? it may actually occur in quite small percentages for the service or cabling . Some may say that 98-99% uptime is good, ideally 100% but well we don't always live in a perfect world . Telecom has checked that their line is OK and I "belief" my internal line is also OK . It's happening almost every day for the last 2 weeks . The connection drops for, from 2 minutes to half an hour and after a reboot, both my pc and the ADSL router it connects again . I also notice that the ADSL signal on the Nokia front panel is on steadily even during the disconnection time . I do suspect the Nokia router (old Ni500) but unfortunately, I don't have another router to test . I am quite annoyed with that Xtra's helpdesk guy because he said that I have to use the automatic dns settings as they are changing their dns from time to time . But what if my network doesn't support this capability? |

If using 2k/xp or other suitable ones. When the issue manifests see where it seems to stop e.g. to Router or from router to WAN. |

| 355317 | 2005-05-15 09:07:00 | I used to have same modem. 202.27.184.3 / 202.27.184.5 I have always used these settings without problem even with my new Alcatel. There was another thread not that long ago saying that you can use any ISP's DNS settings regardless of your ISP. Have a search and try others to see if it makes a difference. |

| 355318 | 2005-05-15 09:28:00 | I used to have same modem . 202 . 27 . 184 . 3 / 202 . 27 . 184 . 5 I have always used these settings without problem even with my new Alcatel . There was another thread not that long ago saying that you can use any ISP's DNS settings regardless of your ISP . Have a search and try others to see if it makes a difference . I was using the above settings (since I got Jetstream years ago) until 2-3 days ago when I rang Xtra about my disconnection problem and they advised me to use the new settings i . e . 202 . 27 . 158 . 40 and 202 . 27 . 156 . 72 . The main issue here is (other than my connection problem) this helpdesk chap (this evening) insisted that I have to use the automatic dns settings; and he further claims that he is a qualified computer engineer . When I requested to speak to his supervisor, he said that he is the supervisor . I then requested to speak to his higher authority, he told me that there isn't anyone available until Monday! I'll ring up again tomorrow to straighten up this matter . I wish to know and confirm: Is there anything wrong with using a static DNS address in order to have a stable Jetstream connection? Cheers |

| 355319 | 2005-05-15 09:44:00 | I have no knowledge whatsoever about the difference between it detecting automatically or adding them manually. I do recall when I first had NI500 on ME then it was definitely automatic. When I upgraded to XP did I learn about setting the DNS manually as it wouldnt work otherwise. This might support your arguement but I have no idea why I had to put those settings there. I think from memory the software that came with the NI500 was not compatible. I rang the Nokia helpdesk who advised me about putting in those DNS settings. | sam m (517) | ||
| 355320 | 2005-05-15 10:17:00 | What service is bk T, I'm on Jetsarter or Jetstart via Paradise which is basically a Telecom service resold by Paradise . I have been getting frequent drop off's of late, sounds pretty similar, right down to cycling the router except I use a Dynalink RTA210 . This happens in both win2k, in which I use Paradises DNS server addresses, and Linux which has no DNS numbers set, automatic . I suspect they are dropping the routers IP and not reassigning one, so a reboot forces the router to fetch a new one and Telecom system to assign one . Does that make sense or is that off the track as far as the technology goes?? |
