355687 2005-05-16 21:25:00 Am running XP Pro fully patched with all security updates but have just discovered machine was infected with Java/ByteVerify. (Thought the patches were supposed to protect your machine from this sort of thing! :annoyed: )
Lucy :(
Now you know the MS updates are not designed to keep your PC infection free.
Have a look in the windows folder. The path of the virus should tell you the folders name. I had a PC with this and there were 2 "java" related folders - one the real one and another. I deleted the entire dodgy folder and the PC was fine. (And didn't ask for Java to be reinstalled).
Then get in addition to the virus checker, Spybot and ADaware, Spywareblaster and run Hijackthis as well. And use a firewall (one other than Microsofts)

355688 2005-05-17 00:12:00 Thanks for the replies

Zqwery - yes I can dial out but not from within the applications.

Beama - I think I have cleaned up the virus now. All temp java applets have been deleted.
Dialup options are ok and are set to always dial default connection.

Pctek - I may be green but not a total cabbage. :dogeye: I am aware of security and machine runs AVG updated daily, is fully patched with all security updates, runs spybot with resident tea timer, spyguard, spyblaster, adaware and Kerio firewall.

I think I have cleared out the virus as all scans now tell me system is clean - system restore turned off to clear that out. The only issue remaining is that of not being able to access dialup from within applications.

355689 2005-05-17 00:34:00 Have you tried a non-IE based browser? Avant browser is likely to catch the same cold as IE. At least if a different browser works you can pin point the issue in IE/Avant/Outlook. Murray P (44)
355690 2005-05-17 00:53:00 As a matter of security, I do not allow any application to intiate a dail out connection, maybe of some comfort Lucy.

One thing that I came across in my travels the other day, check that your dailup connection is listed as default, I found the other day that didnt and the symptoms were simular to what you describe

355691 2005-05-17 05:15:00 Just installed Firefox and no problems with invoking dialup so it's just a MS issue.
Don't really like using Firefox - my wheel mouse scroll function doesn't work with it. ( edit: Got mouse working now)

Beama, I know what you are saying about controlling access to net by not allowing programes to dialup but I have manual control over that one - I unplug the modem when not in use. Guess I'm just lazy and like the "convenience" of just clicking on icon to get surfing and I find it extremely annoying when things don't work the way they are supposed to.

Oh well, I guess I have to put up with things the way they are until the next format.

Thanks all for your help

355692 2005-05-17 06:42:00 Go grab some extensions for Firefox Lucy, Tools > Extensions > Get more extensions or Update for your existing ones. Murray P (44)
355693 2005-05-17 08:34:00 Will do that and may even grab Thunderbird for mail and say goodbye to MS products for browsing and email.
