355321 2005-05-15 10:28:00 What service is bk T, I'm on Jetsarter or Jetstart via Paradise which is basically a Telecom service resold by Paradise.

I have been getting frequent drop off's of late, sounds pretty similar, right down to cycling the router except I use a Dynalink RTA210. This happens in both win2k, in which I use Paradises DNS server addresses, and Linux which has no DNS numbers set, automatic.

I suspect they are dropping the routers IP and not reassigning one, so a reboot forces the router to fetch a new one and Telecom system to assign one. Does that make sense or is that off the track as far as the technology goes??

I don't really quite understand what you're trying to say, Murray. I'm using a static DNS setting as my Ni500 doesn't support automatic DNS and have been using it since Jetstream's early days. Then, this guy suddenly came and told me that I can't use it. What's the logic?

355322 2005-05-15 11:42:00 My point is that I'm having similar problems to you with different settings on two different OS's. My router doesn't have the DNS settings entered, therefore I assume it is automatically converts user@pardise into it's equivalent DNS once it has authenticated the user DNS (not sure of the process, somebody might like to elaborate). I do have DNS servers set in TCP/IP in windows, but not in Linux (this info is passed to the router which uses NAT to interpret fron WAN to LAN & visa versa).

So it would seem, however this person is attempting to have your router set up, it makes no diff assuming I am experiencing the same problems.

355324 2005-05-16 06:49:00 Have just phoned Xtra's helpdesk and requested to speak to a Supervisor to clarify this matter . This time, this lady politely told me that I CAN use the static DNS server address for Jetstream connection and apologised for the 'misunderstands' caused by the other helpdesk representative .

I am happy that they admitted that their representative was wrong in saying that I must use the automatic obtaining DNS server settings!

They are now investigating the cause of my frequent disconnections .

Cheers

355325 2005-08-01 11:33:00 Hi,

interesting reading as I am having similar problems with connectivity.

mostly in the evening, for no apparent reason I can't connect, the modem, Dlink 302G won't let me in to see whats happening so I have to re-boot, loosing the connection logs from previous sessions. If i didn't know any better, I'd say that Xtra's radius servers are clowning about, not renewing IP's after release.

I have been on th Xtra discovery pack for 3 weeks and I'm on my second modem, no change.

can you post back to the group the response you get about your disconnects please, it may help me diagnose mine.

Kindest regards

Trevor

355326 2005-08-01 20:01:00 you say the connection light on the modem stays on even though the connection is dropped, I had this issue also, not the same isp and it turned out to be a faulty line filter (worth a check maybe). beama (111)
355327 2005-08-01 22:11:00 I use Xtra jetstream with the D-Link router and a network with Linux and Win98SE.
In both computers and the router, I have the static IPs of the DNS servers.

Back when we were on dialup, we used to request those DNS IPs as it made the connection more stable (we didn't get knocked offline all the time).

I have only been unable to connect twice thus far on adsl... the day Xtra went down nationally, and yesterday morning (lets hope its not a trend for things to come)

355328 2005-08-02 08:48:00 Mmmm,

after complaining by email to them, and then getting a reply this morning, it all works fine tonight, (so far). it all seems to have fixed it's self.

perhaps someone can explain to me........

I've been asked by Xtra to check my phone socket, connections and cables etc. do cables suddenly stop working between 6 and 9 pm every day on the north island then?

:)
