1386061 2014-10-11 02:31:00 Does anyone know how to remove the Microsoft pop-up advising that support for Win XP has finished and we should update to Win 8.1?

I can close it ok, but it pops up again a few minutes later.

1386062 2014-10-11 02:45:00 Every One I've seen theres a check box bottom Left of the window saying dont remind me again ( or words to that effect)

You should also be able to uninstall the Update KB2934207 then turn off Windows updates since there wont be any more any way.

Or if you are happy in the reg, will tell it not to display.

1386063 2014-10-11 20:00:00 Thanks Wainui, no it definitely doesn’t have a tick box to kill it and it doesn’t have update KB2934207 by the look of it.

The actual computer belonged to my sister-in-laws late husband, and by the look of it there has been no “housekeeping” since its purchase years ago either.

Anyway, I’ll try the Registry edit if I can work out how to add "DisableEOSNotification"=dword:00000001 :D

1386064 2014-10-11 20:55:00 Dont muck about with the reg if you're no to sure, can cause all sorts of problems.

Have a read of www.techygeekshome.co.uk Theres some command prompts to remove, also the first picture shows the check box.

The KB will be there, but it wont be in the Add/remove programs, its more than likely either a hidden update, or add/remove components.

There are actually two KB's, Ones for XP and the other is for Microsoft Security Essentials, so if its MSE then there is no check box.

1386065 2014-10-11 22:11:00 Thanks again Wainui .

Well I tried running wusa . exe /uninstall /norestart /KB:2949787 and got the message wusa . exe couldn't be found!

Anyway, having never heard of wusa . exe I did some googling and it appears it doesn't exist in Win XP, only from Vista onward, so that's a bit of useless information from Techy Geeks . :D

And yes, it is the Microsoft Security Essentials end of life message that is coming up which doesn't have a check box to kill it .

To complicate things further, a search for KB:2949787 including Hidden Files finds nothing .

Looks like uninstalling Security Essentials completely is the next step . :D

1386066 2014-10-11 22:34:00 OK, Security Essentials is uninstalled and so far so good.

Next question is: What is the best FREE Antivirus that will work satisfactorily on a low spec XP computer?

My thoughts are AVG and Avast might kill it?

:thanks

1386067 2014-10-12 01:22:00 IF IT HAS to be free, then www.360safe.com Its not to bad on low sec XP's ( have a couple of customers who run XP Celerons and 700MB of Memory) and it works OK. ( NO its Not Norton) It has Bit Defenders Scanning engine.

Not to Sure if Bit Defender has a free edition or what its system resource usage is like, last time I looked trying to get the so called free one there were numerous pop up warnings by Nod32 as it stopped it from downloading.

My thoughts are AVG and Avast might kill it?
Seriously you would be better off with No AV than use those. Had a lot of PC's with one or the other installed brought to a crawl if they were installed, or killed by infections.

Still I would recommend Nod32.

My sentiments entirely Wainui.

Any thoughts on Avira?

Any thoughts on Avira? Know of it, but have not tried or seen it in action for quite a while, so no idea what its like these days.

AVG will bring the PC to a crawl, and miss LOTS - Avast -- Well its not as good as it once was and from what I've seen it quite pushy to get the paid version. Last PC I had here that had avast installed ( but killed) had so many infections that Malwarebytes and Nod picked out it wasn't even funny.
