1385511 2014-10-02 23:30:00 Hi Team

I have not yet upgraded to SB 2.XX, principally because of the rather negative initial responses to the new version.

I have hung on with V1.6.2, which initially was no longer supported with updates and said so when I attempted to download new definitions etc, however that message is now gone and it did in fact update yesterday when I tried once more.

So, have the issues and/or shortcomings of SB 2.xx been overcome and is it now good to go?

Cheers

1385512 2014-10-03 00:41:00 I haven't bothered using it for years.

NOD32 - scan occasionally with malwarebytes, if somehow you've managed to get an infection or some adware, run JRT, ADWCleaner, and the above.

Last time I saw Spybot it was a bloated annoying mess. :2cents:

Tried it for a while when it first came out, it was hopeless, missed way to much. As a test I did a scan with V2 on a PC, it found a few, then uninstalled it, and put the old one in, that found a LOT more that V2 had missed.

Theres a couple of other antimalware programs I use as well along with the ones mentioned above. Nothings perfect and it usually happens they will all find things the others miss.

1385515 2014-10-03 01:42:00 I gave up on it a while back but I always liked the advanced mode start-up tool of the original as it had a lot of information about what the entries were rather than just listing them, what I didn't understand was a couple times when the startup tool listed an item as malware after a full scan had found nothing.

I just use the tool in CCleaner or the inbuilt windows ones for start-up now and personally use windows defender (anti-virus not the older anti-malware) and malwarebytes, supplemented with an occasional scan from nod32's free online scan tool when I remember to.

I want to like spybot because they were one of the first but they just haven't kept up well. I used to use Ad-aware as well but haven't even looked for it in years.

What are the other antimalware programs you use now as effie c and myself have always followed your recommendations for antimalware programs

roguekiller/ (www.bleepingcomputer.com)

Hitman Pro (www.surfright.nl)

Then depending on the infections there may be specific pieces of software required, designed for specific infections.

Keep in mind, many of these are not needed to be run weekly/ monthly etc.

Personally I use Nod32 which has active/real-time scanning enabled, as well as Malwarebytes and ccleaner.

Heres an example of blocking possible "trouble"-- Went to a lets say unsafe site :devil ( for obvious reasons the full Message giving its name and IP are not shown):

5960

Lots of AV's (including Avast) would allow these through :crying

Ccleaner gets run every night before closing down the Computers.

Nod32 runs every Friday Evening, and Malwarebytes I run either Friday or Saturday. 99% of the time Malwarebytes doesn't find anything.

Every so often I will run the whole lot, but they never find anything. Nod seems to stop most things, but then again safe surfing has a lot to do with it, look :stare: at whats being asked to download and never just go next next next when installing, again look to whats being asked & use either custom or advanced setups.

1385518 2014-10-03 03:23:00 Thanks so much for your reply Wainui. Yea effie and I both have Eset and run Malwarebytes and CCleaner but will have a look at what you and Watt have suggested as well. Just as a matter of interest is Superantispyware off your list now??

Cheers

1385519 2014-10-03 03:30:00 I should have also mentioned I don't *just* use those programs I listed - as Wainui has said, often there is a need for others, depending on the situation.

For what Billy has mentioned, he doesn't need any advanced removal software, he's more talking about something 'live' that runs in the background, or something that you'd run weekly.

Rougekiller etc are not the kind of tools you'd run on a weekly basis - malwarebytes is. They are more for removing an infection you know is there, if that makes sense..

I personally don't use superantispyware anymore.

My full malware removal suite consists of the following, if anyone is interested. Obviously the use of these is dependent on the type of infection.

NOD32
Malwarebytes
ComboFix
JRT
ADWCleaner
SC-Cleaner (fixes broken/malicious shortcuts)
RougeKiller
RKill
TDSSKiller
Malwarebytes chameleon
Hitman Pro

Also on occasion, a specific tool from Eset, or someone else, that is specifically designed to remove a particular rootkit etc.

And as well as that lot, I always run CCleaner, reset IE, clear the system restore cache, update flash and java on machines that have been infected.

If there are any registry permission issues, I've found the tweaking.com repair tool quite handy too.

1385520 2014-10-03 03:30:00 Yeah Smithie, gave up on Superantispyware a while back. It used to be quite good, but over time I've found its become a bit bloated and again misses to much.

Done tests where Super was installed, ran it, then ran Malwarebytes or the others and they picked up items Super missed (quite a few in some cases)
