1385505 2014-10-02 19:18:00 What have you got to lose? Try it for yourself. I've had a black genius for over 2 years and it has been fine but you will get a different brand white one. linw (53)
1385506 2014-10-03 04:02:00 They *will* connect you with a non-Genius router. Just tell them you want your username / password and to be on your way. Tell them you've had VPN issues (Their Genius Black router %@#$'s with some VPNs and they couldn't get around it last I tried), and they'll let you use your own.

Only thing is if you don't use theirs, you can't use their Genius SIP Line. That's the only gotcha to be aware of.

1385507 2014-10-04 06:50:00 The old black one isn't the most fantastic but it was nice and functional for the most part.
I was a bit disappointed I couldn't use my old netcomm, but since I upgraded to VDSL they've given me a new netcomm one, which I really do like. It's come full circle I suppose :)

1385508 2014-10-04 12:34:00 The new one is based on the Netcomm NF4V. It's nice, but again they've pissed around with the firmware. The original Netcomm bug where the DNS forwarded dies regularly is still an issue (mitigated easily even with the original firmware by having DHCP give out the DNS server of the ISP, not the router), but they've gone and added in a few other silly little things of their own too. Have fun finding them :D Chilling_Silence (9)

Your existing modem will be Ok but if you are going for VDSL you may have to upgrade it. You will not be able to use the phone over the Internet (Naked ADSL2 ?). I found that the SIP line was a pain, when you really needed it, like when the broadband was off, you couldn't use it. I only use a cell phone now, much less hassle and always with me. You can also use the cell phone as a modem in emergencies. If you need a house phone why don't you get a Home package with phone included?

1385510 2014-10-05 20:36:00 Well yeah that's probably coz of a shitty router crashing, your broadband *shouldn't* be down. Before a power outage we had a few weeks back coz some kid wrapped a car around a power pole nearby, my router had a ~300 day uptime.
Our quality was significantly better on VoIP vs the crappy copper line too.

Thing is if you go with a 3rd party provider for SIP like 2talk, they're ISP independent and will let you use it if you happen to switch between Spark / Orcon / whoever.
