1371505 2014-03-29 05:40:00 In token defence, when I wrote this:

how to maintain those high standards set by the AKL Gateway throughout the rest of the country.

I meant "the rest of the country" to be that outside the airport boundaries (the AKL Gateway) - and especially Auckland.

But mea culpa. Obviously suburbs such as Wainuiomata, Johnsonville, and Tawa should not be considered objects of approbrium and its denizens derided. Indeed even though one of J'ville's famous sons - or its only one - (Kevin Black) often felt it necessary to remind his (Auckland) followers of that ...

1371506 2014-03-29 05:50:00 Trouble is many Auckland people think the whole country is Auckland, sad for them but its not.

It may be the biggest city in , but with that comes bigger problems, higher rates, and more of the people complain about higher costs ---- so sad never mind live in a rat race expect to get run over - meaning when people start losing their homes or businesses because of development will they gladly go sure not a worry -- Makes a good Tuis ad ;)

BTW Wal if your going to criticize other places, please spell the words correctly -- Its spelt Opprobrium not with an A :p

You're preaching to the converted as far as I'm concerned, WT. I'm a Wellingtonian at heart who made a wrong careeer move to Auckland during the 80's crash

Sorry about the "a" in opproprium, WT. But I only ever criticise, God forbid I should criticize. And I would use "you're" rather than "your" :D

1371508 2014-03-29 06:05:00 Sadly heard of several people who did similar over the years, moved to another place, then in their cases didn't have the money to move again. Kind of stuck due to lack of funds.

Guess we'll all have to wait and see what develops, in the past when ever something like this has been proposed you can triple (if not more) the projected budget.

And who pays for it ?? not the government thats for sure.

1371509 2014-03-29 06:23:00 The thing is for people from overseas to visit Wellington they need to come in from Auckland to visit all the hick towns.

Pretty much. AKL is pretty much the only gateway unless you go thru Australia / Islands. AirNZ and Cathay have pulled out of CHC International. Air Asia ditto.

While WLG wants to extend the runway it might be good for whatever benefit down the future road and maybe Emirates might use it but currently I don't see who else that does long haul would fly to a non-AKL airport.

If one also looks at the airlines for long haul ex. Australia and the Islands there are not many airlines here. AirNZ is the only one that flys to Japan or North America apart from Hawaiian Airlines. They now just codeshare. Just a few yrs ago, Royal Brunei, EVA Air, JAL have pulled out, Jetstar on their SG route will end come July. Qantas have always gone thru Australia so it's really just a trans tasman flight. Even AirNZ themselves used to service Singapore, mabe Kuala Lumpur and Seoul from memory. Long long gone are Air Canada, United Airlines, Continental etc.

Precisely. Parochial isues aside, AKL (by which I mean Auckland International Airport, not Auckland City) is the logical Gateway, and a hub for routes to other NZ destinations.

What I was saying was, Auckland International Airport is proposing a brilliant transportation hub for our part of the world; the rest of the country needs to get in behind it and develop their own complementary facilities.
