But you can't login to the council and see a statement.

The Council can only tell you what they know. Be prepared for a very long silence.

1371225 2014-03-25 08:16:00 Yup and the new system is currently up for tender (www.ird.govt.nz) and will probably cost the govt ( Us) somewhere in the region of $1 BILLION or more by the time it is finished.

This reminds us of NOVAPAY and earlier, the Police contract with IBM to implement the news INCIS system. Ultimately IBM abandoned it and paid the government to get out of the contract. I don't think Talent2 could afford to buy off our government but NOVAPAY continues to be a mess.

The idea of a new IRD computing system makes me shudder.

Here is some enlightening information on the success - or more accurately the failure of new software architecture systems. Sobering stuff.

When I moved here, rates were up to date.
I started payments, continued like that, then they sent a you owe us bill.
Thought it odd, rang, no I owe it, so I paid it. Continued payments as normal.
They sent another you owe us.
Paid it.

After a bit I got told I had over $500 credit.
Why?

When I eventually got the accounts lady, she worked it all out and the 2 I owed them payments - well I hadn't owed anything, which is why the excess credit.

So now, I keep a spreadsheet, with a running balance. I make the payments, they issue a bill (although I don't actually receive one), that comes off, I get the balance.

I am in credit, but not that much anymore....that way I know for sure whats paid etc...

I also have the accounts lady's direct email address now.

Stupid that I have to do that, and they can't...but they blame the new computer system. Doesn't surprise me, I did some contracting to do with it, the way it was being run was crazy, massively inefficient.

1371227 2014-03-25 18:58:00 I think the last time the Revenue was overhauled was in about 1987, and that was by Arthur Andersen Consulting. Credit where it's due, there were no major snafus, but some (now) obscure shortcuts or accounting shorthand methods found their way into the programs. But then, it (Arthur Andersen) was locally run by a bunch of Aussies from Melbourne, what could you expect? :p

:2cents:

Andersens moved on from being one of the top highflyers and respected firms in the world, ranking in the top five and regarded as the conscience of the accounting industry, to become a major player in the scandals surrounding Waste Management and Enron. Its subsequent demise and collapse was spectacular to say the least for a firm founded on the highest ethical standards.

Yup, I remember the big 5 accounting firms
Arthur Andersen (no longer in existence)
Deloitte & Touche
Ernst & Young
KPMG Peat Marwick
PricewaterhouseCoopers

My dad was a partner with Ernst and Whiney before they merged with Arthur Young in Australia.

1371230 2014-03-26 13:31:00 There are so many stupid issues like this which I've begun to notice a lot more since mining LiteCoin. Questioning everything from the value of a dollar to payment processing fees with Credit Cards etc...

Whole monetary system needs a great big shake-up really.

we should abolish money and replace artificial scarcity with prosperity.

Nothing stopping you from starting on your own.
If you really feel that way, you can allways easily just reject money & everything to do with it. You will need to live in a cave and will have no access
to anything but the most basic essentials (ie food & water)

Its been tried , It never works long term , it only takes a few to completely corrupt a cashless system.

1371232 2014-03-26 21:57:00 Actually you'd still need land, to farm, which costs money. Once you have said land though, and are freehold, you can live off it by farming it, growing livestock etc Chilling_Silence (9)
