1371786 2014-04-02 04:37:00 Hi All.
I may have asked this question before, but my addled brain doesn't remember.

We have a Panasonic TV wirh UHF box, The aerial is on the highest point of the roof. We already have an existing satellite dish, unused,. Is there any way we can change from UHF to Satellite.

The signal has deteriorated since the Roberts Rd repeater was shutdown now we have topoint the UHF towards Palmerston North. To make it worse...There is a hill spur which we are just on the edge of which could also be affecting us.
The picture disintegrates into random lines & colour patterns.

Any ideas Please? PJ

1371787 2014-04-02 04:42:00 You'll need a freeview satellite receiver. If you mean for freeview. Something like this (www.dicksmith.co.nz)

Its what I use here as well as the TV with builtin freeview UHF. The firmware on this may not be the latest. If it isn't it's here (www.dishtv.co.nz)

1371788 2014-04-02 04:50:00 As speedy says, you need a satellite box to get Freeview, the TV are UHF (or UHF Freeview boxes). You should able to use the existing sat dish then if it is still wired to the wall etc. Nomad (952)
1371789 2014-04-02 06:49:00 The only way to get HD is from UHF, so it may be worth your while to get a better UHF antenna rather than going Sat. Alex B (15479)
1371790 2014-04-02 07:08:00 Might be worth to get a real RG6 cable to plug the TV to the wall if you are just using a cheap cable. We did that to ours and it gave a much better reception. We are also in tricky location which we have a double phased array exterior aerial. Nomad (952)
1371791 2014-04-02 15:00:00 Can you Post a photo of your UHF antenna? and your distance to the Wharite transmitter. apsattv (7406)
1371792 2014-04-02 19:07:00 As far as i am aware.............. wharite is near palmerston north ? and we are in Wanganui so id say a fair distance apart wouldnt you? complete different towns........... but freeview is not good all the time it stuffs up regularly.......:( and i am in wanga's but different suburb to PJ beetle (243)
1371793 2014-04-02 19:14:00 I'd say there are 2 choices.
Freeview or Sky.
Both involve a dish and a box, unless you have a TV with built in Freeview.

My parents started off with Freeview, then went to Sky.

He said the picture difference was noticeable, Sky was better.

1371794 2014-04-02 19:39:00 PJ - 1. check your antenna: is it your old, old vhf antenna from pre-Freeview days? A newer antenna - designed for Freeview channels - could bring improvement. Check with neighbours as you walk along the road, see what is on their chimney or rooftop.
2. Satellite box won't give HD TV but with our old eyes probably don't see the difference between SD and HD. But ensure that the dish still has the essential bits in the middle and that it still has cable from dish to living room.
3. If you go for HD Terrestrial you'll probably need new antenna and the installation guy may tell you that your TV is too old to do justice to HD. Is the TV a recent model - last five years?
