356200 2005-05-18 05:45:00 Hi all
Hoping that someone will be able to help me.
A few weeks back after my DH had been on my PC (running XP) my settings changed and I cant get them to change back. Every time the comouter boots up instead of going directly to the desk top it goes to the log on/ change user screen and I have to click on the only user profile there (mine) and then it starts up. If the screen saver starts up and I go back to use it I find the same user log on screen as when I first started is back again.
I never used to have this screen and I would like to go back to not having it.
What settings do I change. I am sure it will be simple but I just cant get it to by-pass this log on screen.

Many Thanks in advance

Meg

356201 2005-05-18 09:30:00 Screen saver

Control Panel -> find the Display control panel -> Screensaver tab -> uncheck "on resume, password protect"

Automatic logon

Start menu -> Run -> enter the following: control userpasswords2 and click OK -> select your username by left-clicking on it -> uncheck "users must enter a password and username to use this computer" -> click Apply and just leave the password fields blank.

Well the above works on XP Professional at least..

356202 2005-05-18 12:08:00 Hi Gibler
Thanks for the advice. The first part re; the screen saver works but the second part is causing me some grief. When I change the settings and restart it hangs on the "Windows is starting up screen". I did notice that there were not individaul options to uncheck "users must enter a password and username to use this computer" it simply applied to all users??
Maybe this is the problem as I am running XP Home.

will give it another go and see what happens.

Have a great day

356203 2005-05-18 12:26:00 Another session of trial and error and I have managed to get it all back to normal... not quite. I am now getting and error message on start up that reads: "You do not have rights to access the service control manager & the MARKFUN driver is not installed or started. Please ask your administrator to install the driver on your behalf"
What the ..........??
And then after that I get another error window that says: " Error MarkFun_Load_NT_Driver"
What is Mark Fun????

356204 2005-05-18 12:54:00 Oh no!
Now I cant get into make any changes as it has demoted me from System Administrator and I cant do anything. It keeps asking for my administration password and I have never had one.
Hope everyone out there is having a better night than me :-(

356205 2005-05-18 19:31:00 Hi Meg

The MarkFun_Load_NT_Driver error appears to be associated with a program called EasyTune which is part of the Gigabytes motherboard utilities. You should find this program under Add/Remove and you can uninstall it which should remove this error. This program can be used to overclock your computer with (doubt very much you require this). There probably is an updated of this program on the Gigabyte website if you wish to keep this program.

Where it is now asking you for an Admin password, what happens if you just leave that field blank and click OK? You might need to get into Safe Mode by tapping F8 before the machine start to load Windows. If you select the Admin account under Safe Mode, this doesn't have a password (if XP Home) and you should be able to then return your user account to Admin privilages.

Have you scanned your machine for viruses and malware/spyware with up to date programs? Do this while you are in Safe Mode. Download Spybot Search & Destroy (www.safer-networking.org) and Ad-aware SE (free Ed) (www.lavasoftusa.com), install and update both programs with their inbuilt Update function first, and then scan your machine.

356206 2005-05-18 22:25:00 Hi Jen
I have tried what you suggest in Safe Mode but still no luck. I contacted the local company that built my machine and installed XP and asked them if they loaded a generic password and they tell me that they didn't. I have found an interesting article at pubs.logicalexpressions.com but I dont know if this will work with SP2 (Microsoft may have repaired it in SP2)
Have a great day

356208 2005-06-04 02:30:00 Thanks Meg & Gibler for the very handy post - found by just searching on "user log". I use XP Pro too but without a screensaver so the second suggestion worked fine. Many thanks - Tony KiwiGPS (7273)
