356209 2005-05-18 05:30:00 Hello everyone,

My university minimum requirements (for the processor) on a laptop is an Athlon XP 2000+ or a Pentium 4 2 GHz. I saw a Compaq with a Celeron 350 1.3 GHz processor and I was not sure if this is sufficient because both the Athlon XP 2000+ and the Pentium 4 2.0 GHz have a faster processor, but Celeron M 350 has a faster 400 MHz FSB and more L2 cache (1MB). Please help, this laptop is beautiful, but I need to know if it is ok for college.

Thanks,

356210 2005-05-18 05:36:00 If those are the absolute minimum requirements as stated then the Celeron is well short. You sure that fsb isn't 4x100, Intel's fsb spec's (what they advertise) are different. Murray P (44)
356211 2005-05-18 06:30:00 The intel site says that it has the same bus as the "Intel® Pentium® M processor 705", "Intel® Pentium® M processor 715" and some higher aaccalumni (8147)
356212 2005-05-19 04:45:00 whatever you get make sure you get 512mb/1024 of ram as well cheaper to get when buying the laptop then adding it in later. :) Will make a big difference too. :) memphis (2869)

Unless you are intending to run processor intensive applications like games, compiling software or running server applications like databases you should be worrying more about ensuring the thing is backed up properly. 356214 2005-05-19 21:16:00 You mean hard drive space like if I have enough I should be ok? aaccalumni (8147)
356215 2005-05-19 21:40:00 Hi,

I mean in terms of how fast the hard drive can seek to a particular location on the disk, and how much data it can read or write per second.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, unless you will be required to actually use the laptop for a particular activity as part of the curriculum. If you are just typing stuff in a word processor you could use a P3 500MHz with 256MB of RAM and a 20GB harddrive quite happily! :)

Personally I don't use my laptop for gaming, so the most important thing for me is the battery life, as I hate plugging it in. If you are in a lecture taking notes on the laptop I think battery life will be important to you too.
