356082 2005-05-17 19:12:00 I want to build a custom PC for gaming only, I want something that can play graphically taxing games like Half-Life 2, Doom 3, Far Cry, etc... with maxed settings. The problem is I feel very over my head buying a new PC.

I have most of the components I want picked out, I just need to buy a desktop to put them in.

This is where my tech-newbness really shows. I have no idea what to get. Or really how to read tech specs. All I know is I want something that is an AMD, (I hear bad things about Intel and gaming.) And I need it to be under $800.00. I found some nice, cheap PCs on Ebay in the 3.0Ghz or above section.

Can someone do me a huge favor and help me pick out a PC to customize? Any input is appreciated, and I can't thank you enough.

356083 2005-05-17 20:29:00 I'm leaning towards this PC:

cgi.ebay.com

Is it any good? Should I look for something better?

356084 2005-05-17 21:25:00 And what did u hear about Intel and gaming thats so bad??

There's nothing wrong with Intel CPU's..

I would have to go for AMD, if you dont want to go over $800. Unless its secondhand. An Intel system would cost way more than an AMD system.

Thats US $. It maybe 699 there. Doesn't mean it'll be 699 in NZ. If this is where you are.

356085 2005-05-17 21:28:00 Unless you are based in the USA, the person selling this item will not ship it to you as they only ship to the US.

The item is priced at $699.00 (US), which equates to approximately $1000.00 (NZ).

What are you going to do for warranty if something goes wrong with the computer?

Maybe you need to go to your local PC store (not chain store), and take the specs of this computer and see what they can do....... :2cents:

356086 2005-05-17 21:43:00 I'm in the USA, so shipping isn't a problem . And It's pretty cheap .

It does have a 3 year warranty and Tech Support .

Spec-wise, how is the PC? With a new video card would it be able to run high end games well?

I've tried some local PC shops, most really don't have anything I'm looking for .

356087 2005-05-17 22:26:00 Video card is a weakspot, go for a 6600Gt at least, it will perform far better then the card in the configuration.

On second thoughts ditch the entire system, look for one using the Nforce4 chipset,939-pic cpu and a Geforce 6600GT or better.

356088 2005-05-17 22:51:00 Well, I would be replacing the video card with a Radeon 9800 pro .

How about this Bare model,

. ebay . com/ws/eBayISAPI . dll?ViewItem&category=52475&item=5197142240&rd=1" target="_blank">cgi . ebay . com

I have no clue what you were talking about with the Nforce chipset or were to find one .

Should I be looking at AMD or Intel processors?

356089 2005-05-17 23:27:00 I was looking at buying a Nforce motherboard on Zipzoomfly.com, and it said the desktop has to have an atx 2.0 compliant power supply, does that PC I posted the link to have that? Or how do I find out if it is. Metalive (7167)
356090 2005-05-18 00:58:00 Intel CPU's run all games, including online great, but will cost more. For graphics Radion 9800 Pro is the way to go. That system listed a mid-tower case? I wouldn't cram too many high output components into a mid-tower. And it didn't realy say too much about the quality of the power supply. You can put together the hardware with whatever components you pick easy. Setting up the software is the real chore, and that system came blank. Do it yourself. PS, Buying anything online it's a long way to get any service or advice. Once you pay for it, you're on your own. I wouldn't want to try to contact someone by e-mail for help on a Saturday matthew (803)
356091 2005-05-18 01:01:00 PS, Once you go with either AMD or Intel, you are sort of locked in. Any upgrades or changes will have to match . My advice is buy quality. You will never regret it, Buy cheap and you may always regret it. matthew (803)
