356258 2005-05-18 08:23:00 Does anyone know of a script that can, when a site is loaded, install certain fonts onto the viewers computer? Dannz (1668)
356259 2005-05-18 08:58:00 Installing items onto a viewers computer when that website is loaded sounds a little ... risky. Shouldn't the PC's security settings prevent this? Why do you need this to happen? Just curious. :) Jen (38)
356260 2005-05-18 09:03:00 I think the only way to make sure someone viewing your site sees the font you want them to is if it's in an image. With CSS you can specify multiple fonts to use if your first choice isn't on the viewers computer. ad_267 (6193)
356261 2005-05-18 09:21:00 Maybe you should ask the spyware people how they install files .. hmm probably ActiveX :D

No way doing this apart from having a link to the fonts and having some install instructions (for the PC, the Mac and Linux... other platforms)

You should just use CSS to specify fonts in the order of preference but forcing fonts (type or indeed size) on people is annoying (they may have their own preferences due to sight problems).

With PHP or similiar you could install the fonts on the web server and create images (or PDFs) that use these fonts and insert them on web pages as GIFs.
I can't recommend it really though - text should be actual text.

356262 2005-05-18 09:49:00 Jen: At school i have the fonts for a site installed on one computer.
They are needed for the site to look right
So when the teacher who is marking it (at home or on a comp i am not allowed to use) views it, it wont look right

356263 2005-05-18 09:57:00 I'm no web building expert (big understatement :p), but surely if you have designed a website that is not viewable on other computers, that is a major fault? Surely the teacher will mark you down for this? Sorry, getting OT from your question, but I'm interested. :) Jen (38)
356264 2005-05-18 10:00:00 Im not too sure, i dont think that is in the requrements
Only to build a 3 page site with Navigation, 2 Pictures and relevant text
Very simple unit standard. (NCEA Level 2)

356265 2005-05-18 10:09:00 I don't see why your site shouldn't work without a specific font. Most websites should display properly with any font. ad_267 (6193)
356266 2005-05-18 10:11:00 Its part of the theme Dannz (1668)
356267 2005-05-18 11:47:00 Theres several solutions to your problem, most of which are probably 'too big a hammer for the nail'.

WEFT (www.microsoft.com) - its 'microsoft made' proprietry stuff, so will only work on IE5.5+ (a tutorial (www.createblog.com) on the WEFT)

sIFR (www.mikeindustries.com) - uses javascript to trapse over your document for marked out headings, and replaces the text with a flash version of the text formatted with a desired font face (example (www.mikeindustries.com)). obviously needs flash plugin installed (well, not really, but for it to work...).

I'm sure you can link a ttf font file from a css file but cant remember exactly how and whther its well supported.
